restoring clone of XP machine on Vista machine - but only "documents and settings" folder needed

Thread needs solution

I have been reading the forum for the past few hours now, but cannot find an answer to my problem – I just hope there are some people around here who can help me, as I am not too tech savvy:

A suitcase with all my computer equipment, CDS, DVDs, etc was stolen, including my laptop running Windows XP. All I could save was an external hard drive with the .tib-files I had created when cloning the laptop’s drive with Acronis True Image Home 10.0 (one complete backup file plus one incremental backup file).
I am now using a Vista-based laptop and do not want to load the backup-files onto this machine – I would be back to XP again, right? Actually, all I need are the documents, photos, music and video folders of the four users I had installed on the XP machine.

Apart of my current laptop running Vista, I also have an older laptop with XP BUT this has only a 40 GB hard drive, while the computer which was stolen had a 100 GB hard drive. Also, I have various external hard drives available.
What can I do to get my files back? I am DESPERATE.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Karsten:

I have TI 2009 and XP pro SP3. With this setup I can open a TI .tib image file with Win Explorer, continue clicking on subfolders until I reach a file that I want, and then open it or copy it as needed.

Please try this with your Vista system. You should be able to copy data files this way. I have never tried to copy folders this way but it should work.

thanks, but that doesn't work with me. My .tib files are just massive files (around 80 GB), not folders. So when I click them windows asks me with which program I want to open them.

Belive you need TI software to connect image to noteobok. Than you can take any file/ folder from there.

You must first install True Image on the system you are using. Then what Fungus says will work.

So you mean I would need to install the same True Image Home 10.0 which I had been using on my XP machine on the new Vista computer? To do that, can I use the original download-link I had received by email when I ordered the software? Is it possible to install on a second computer? But even if I should manage to do that, I still dont quite understand how I would be able to have access to my subfolders in the .tib-file through windows explorer. I would be very grateful if you could help me with these questions.
Thanks!

It is certainly worth trying.

I do not remember. how it was in v.10, as to the best of my recollection after you connect image with program you'll see it as normal drive (the way you see external HD or flash). With later versions it goes automatically, you just click on *.tib file and it opens as drive.
There would not be any problem to download a software once you have original serial.

You should register your version 10 software on the Acronis web site if you haven't already done so. Then you can download the latest build number. Use that file to install the product. I'm not sure about compatibility with Vista though but I think others have done it, K0LO for one.
Once installed Windows will then recognize a .TIB file.
