Restoring disc image on dissimilar hardware from Win 7 to Win 8.1
Hi, I am running ATI 2014 Premium on DELL XPS L502X laptop running Win 7 Pro. I just got a new DELL XPS 9530 running Win 8.1 Pro. Is it possible and safe to restore the disc image from my old laptop onto the new laptop? If yes, will my new laptop be running Win 7 or Win 8.1 after I restore the disc image?
Thanks
Dusan

Thanks, Pat;
I am going to read more about Universal Restore to see if it is an option for me.
Am I going to encounter software licensing problems when I restore old disc image onto the new comp due to the fact that the new comp will run the same software as the old comp?

It depends. If the image you restore is of a computer that has an OEM version of Windows, you will probably have activation issues. You can call Microsoft support and they will probably take care of this, and this deactivate your older Windows version on the OLDER computer. If you have a retail version of Windows, it will activate probably without any issue, and the other activation will be lost.
Some other software will probably have to be reactivated: eg Norton, Microsoft Office, Adobe products, Acronis, etc. Most of these software packages will simply transfer the activation to the new computer, and deactivate the older ones, automatically. In most cases, you would be in violation of the EULA if you kept the OLD computer active with licenses in use in parallel to the new computer.

Hello everyone, I am a little messed up with my PC at work. I explain: I IS A SO win 7 What an OS 8.1 What are started regularly BOTH As a Swiss watch. I purchased in 2016 Acronis True Image. Some time it came to the Communication to update the Acronis with a new version. A few days ago, I do it and reboot the system. All part of a regular, BUT I realize That alone on OS 8.1, SOME HD partitions, are read, and I decide not to understand their reasons in regard to the win7, everything was fine.
RESULT: not being at the head of the Problem, I decide to return (restore) my win 8.1 a day before the update. It asks you to restart the PC. I do, then I choose the Between The Two, the win and 8.1 remains with black screen for several hours, believing In Need of time required for recovery. I realize, however Che ore, they are Spend about 8-10 and Noto What The Light of HD, remains turned off and occasionally flashes a serial manner, repeating the sequence in the SAME time. Practically, the pc, not restart More with System 8.1 mA winning soloist with win 7.
I tried a reset Even with dvd facilities, according to flush the procedure described on the Microsoft forums. I run a chkdsk / r but also to the fine I ask Aid to communities and desisted

Gaetano, welcome to these user forums.
If I understand correctly, you have a dual-boot system with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 installed and active.
When attempting to restore these systems, you should not attempt to do this from within Windows because this has to modify Windows bootloader configuration data to create a temporary Linux OS based recovery environment.
You will need to create the Acronis bootable Rescue Media for your ATIH 2016 and boot from this in order to do the restore of your Windows 8.1 OS partition. I am assuming that you have Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on separate partitions or on separate disks in the computer?
Further, you should boot the Rescue Media in the same way that your Windows OS boots, i.e. using UEFI or using Legacy according to how Windows 7 & 8.1 boot. See webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS

Gaetano, thank you for confirming how your two Windows OS's are organised on separate disks / partitions.
Please can you clarify what the exact status of your system is now?
When you attempted to Restore your Windows 8.1 disk / partition(s) to an earlier time, did you restart into the Acronis True Image application and actually perform the restore, or did the system just restart back into Windows?
I am trying to understand if a Restore took place or not, as I am not sure that this happened?
Are you able to boot into both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on the computer or is there a problem with one of these?
