Restoring disk backup to a disk with different partition structure

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I recently bought a new Dell Studio laptop, which came from the factory with the following disk partitions:
- OEM Partition (39 MB)
- Recovery (14.65 GB)
- OS (451.07 GB)

It's my intention to use Acronis True Image Home 11 as by backup software, so one of the first things I did was to remove the Dell Datasafe software that was pre-insalled on the copmputer, and install ATI. Then, I made a full sector-by-sector of the whole hard disk (i.e. all partitions as mentioned above).

So, my question is this: If I now go and modify the partitions (in particular, to merge the recovery and OS partitions, and split up the the resulting space into three seperate partitions (one for OS, two for data)) will ATI be able to restore the disk using the sector-by-sector backup that I've made so that the disk is restored to its as-new condition? (In other words: I've made a backup of a disk with three partitions. What will happen if I try to restore this onto a disk with four partitions?)

The reason I ask is that when I tested the backup (i.e. go as far as possible in the restore process without actually restoring it) it seems that ATI detects that the backed-up disk had three partitions, and then asks which of the currently existing partitions I want to install each of the backed-up partitions on. (I hope all this makes sense!) So, if, in future, I have a partition structure which doesn't suit the backed-up structure, what will happen?

Thanks,
Vatry

If you backup a partition and want to restore it where there is no partition, you have to have room on the target disk for the new partition. If you tell it to overwrite and existing partition, it has to be big enough to hold it. If you want to restore three partitions, you need to have enough space for each of the partitions and you can restore them one by one.
