Restoring external hard drive to new computer

Thread needs solution

I have a Windows desktop XP 32-bit system. I also have a Windows desktop 7 64-bit system. I used Acronis to backup my Xp system on an external h/d. Can i use that external h/d to restore pictures, music etc,etc to my new computer even though the operating system and "bit" are different? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. p.s. I wanted to use the Belkin Easy Transfer cable, but i only have "one" monitor.

Yes you can restore files such as pictures etc. You won't be able to restore your programs. Those will have to re-installed on the new machine.

I hope you are still active here.
I have True2012 and wish to do the following:
My winXP sp3 is functiong poorly and I wish to repair or reinstall it. However, I have a ton of Adobe and related programs which I dread like crazy to have to reinstall. Is it possibel to backup all programs to another internal HDD, re-install / repair WinXP then restore programs onto the new WinXP?

Thank you.

No it is not possible to backup the programs separately from the OS.

Perhaps the "same side of a different coin", but what about this?
Backup programs and OS completely, reinstall OS, then restore prgrams to this new install?

OR

Maybe I'm making this more complex than necessary. My WinXP Home SP3 is so flukey with BSOD on video, etc. that I'd like to start over with a fresh OS and drivers without reinstalling dozens of programs. Any suggestions?

Thanks again
Greg

Backup file done on Windows 7 machine using TI 2010 Home. My "rescue CD disk" was built using XP machine. Now trying to do a restore TI says "can't read the back up format", which is a *.TIB file structure. I'm trying to build a new "rescue CD" on my Windows 7 laptop (also running TI 2010) but it's been running the building of the backup for over 45 mins. now!! Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Greg,

It really sounds like the best method is to reinstall Windows and then reinstall/setup your programs. Any other method will most likely not be a lasting solution. Usually what I do is create a backup of the clean install and then create another one after installing my programs.

Craig Deere,

It sounds like the TI CD you tried is an older version. Older versions can't read backups created by the newer versions. Try downloading the TI 2010 ISO from your Acronis account and then burn the ISO to a CD. Windows 7 can do this -- just right-click the downloaded ISO file and select the option.
