says update available but won't install

Thread needs solution

Having had many problems, I finally got ATIH working two weeks ago. Now, however, it is saying every time that an update is available. When I try to install, it says an error has occurred, there is already a version installed, which must be removed. This makes no sense to me. Is there a more recent version in the last two weeks? Only information I have on my version is "build 6056". If I remove it, how do I get a new version--I can't update something that is no longer installed.
I also find that after weeks of trying to get this product to work, my support has disappeared- no email, no chat, no nothing except a forum. I am very disappointed in acronis. Any help would be appreciated.

Dave: Welcome to the big and growing club of dissatisfied Acronis users. Me, I am a former user for many years, but it has trashed both of my computers in the last few weeks. If you check around the forum, you will find that Acronis does not uninstall like it should and can result in BSODs. Richard Virtue has written an excellent registry hack to keep the uninstall from crippling your computer - do that before uninstalling to make sure that you can boot again after the uninstall. Also bear in mind that Acronis will foul up other software, including the Windows Control Panel Backup and Restore functionality and USB storage devices, particularly flash drives, from being recognized by Windows Explorer. Again, there is a registry hack which can restore that.

In my personal opinion, after having spent over twenty hours (to date) trying to stabilize my computers, the latest builds of ATIH2012 and the Acronis cleanup tools are malware. Run away! Check out the registry hacks and pray that the uninstall goes smoothly.

Sorry for the bad news, but that is just the way it is. If you have any doubts, start reading these forums. Most people are angry and very dissatisfied.

Thanks for your advice. I had the uninstall nightmare during my first round of difficulty with the software--they gave me some sort of special tool, but I don't know if the leftovers of installing and uninstalling are part of my problem now. Also, I'm beginning to wonder if other backup software (western digital bundled software) is being disabled by Acronis, or vice versa. Nothing is working for me anymore and all I want to do is back up my files.

AFAIK, the WD backup utility is a "customized" adaptation of an earlier True Image version, in which case it will almost certainly have installed its own device class filter version. So yes, it's very likely that you ended up with conflicts between it and TIH, although exactly which versions of what filters-drivers ended up being "in charge" of the resulting hodge-podge is anybody's guess.

Your best bet would be a total "cleanup" if you can achieve it. And then re-install either one or the other, but not both. Before doing anything else, however, suggest a full system backup if you can do that with your Windows native backup feature.
