Scheme Backup Suggestion with double partition : system and data

Thread needs solution

Good morning, i've bought the ATIH 2012 for my system:
Windows 7 HE x64, dual partition on one disc:
-C: - System Partition
-D: - Data partition (on i've transferred the default account folders like Documents, Music,... and also i've setup the www folder for apache where develop my projects)

I think to do one unique backup (one versione backup) for C:, so i can recovery my system quickly with all my apps and settings.

The question was for D: (Data), because i've one external 500Gb HD, and D: i 400GB, which kind of scheme do you suggest?
I don't know if it's better the nonstop backup, to have always one backup with the last situation, or a incremental multi-version backup. Which is better?

thanks,
Roberto.

Roberto,

For the system partition, create a disk and partition backup that contains the entire disk. With 2012, click on disk and partition backup, click on multiple partition selection, then click on disk mode in the upper right, select the disk. Create an Acronis recovery CD and *test* it: boot your computer on it and recover a couple of files from that system backup.

For the data partition, it depends on the nature of the content you have. If most of the data is files in compressed format (like pictures, music, videos, PDF, ZIP files), you typically don't need to keep versions, so a simply sync to the disk should be enough. You can sync with 2012. If you want to keep versions, you can consider SyncBack. If there is data that is changing often (eg. quicken file, work documents) and if you use Outlook, you should use a file and email backup.
For irreplaceable content, make sure you backup to different disks that you can place in different locations. I recommend you also use different backup technologies. For example you can create a sync file backup of your data on a disk you take to the office, and keep a disk at home. Or you add ATI online backup or another online backup software for photos.

When you use ATI, you can choose to do a full backup, incremental or differential. There is not a lot of difference between incremental or differential as long as you keep the number of partial small before doing a new full. The rule of thumb is that the last full validated backup should never be get so old that you would never consider going back to it if you had to (ie your content/OS set up loss would not be catastrophic).
