Several files created during one BU attempt

Thread needs solution

Hello all... thanks so much in advance,

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with TIH 2012 Update 2.1 (build 7133).

I made a backup of my C: disk to an external Western Digital My Passport USB 3 drive (500GB). I had to monitor the bu and hit "retry" six times when prompted that "the specified file does not exist". The action was completed (the bu seems successful), but twenty-two files were created, each of varying size.

Maybe I don't know how TIH works, but I am naively assuming that there is one file per backup. Does TIH use all these files when restoring?

Thanks,
DL

It looks you are posting in two threads, but I would suggest that you use Windows Disk management to delete the H: volume and then create a new volume and format it again as NTFS, then retry your backup using a new task pointing to the newly formatted drive.
Normally on an NTFS formatted drive, Acronis should only create one .tib file per backup unless you have file splitting turned on.

Hi James,

I thought the issues weren't related so I posted a new thread. Sorry if that's a no-no.

I erased the partition that was giving me issues before. I've tried to format it three times and, as soon as I hit format, Computer Management crashes. Thanks for helping me with this. I went through this formatting junk once already with this drive. Maybe it's just a crappy drive???

Hi again James,

Here is a snapshot of my formatting woes.

Thanks again (so much),
DL

I'd say the issues are definitely related. The issues in Windows will affect Acronis. If you have any other drives to use, I would highly suggest that you copy your data from the "F" partition onto another drive. If you can do this, you could then use the Windows commad line utility "diskpart" to "clean" the entire drive and start fresh with new partitions on the drive. If you can do this, and need help with the "diskpart" commands, let us know.

Have you tried moving this drive to another USB port, or changing the data cable between the drive and the computer? Be sure you are connecting the drive directly to the computer without any extension cables, adapters, etc.

Hi James,

I've been dealing with other small biz issues for a while but I've been able to re-visit this this week. Yesterday (after not opening Disk Management for a week) I tried to re-format the second partition that I made on my external usb 3.0 WD My Passport drive and it actually worked without a hitch. I couldn't believe it. The only thing I did differently was make the partition a little bit smaller than I did last time (I made the partition 200MB smaller than the max allowable partition size).

The first disk backup I tried to complete to the new partition failed. I then tried to make a file backup and just included everything on the C drive. QUESTION: what is the difference between making a full disk backup and making a file backup that includes everything on the C drive? Also, can I use a file backup of the C drive to restore my entire computer?

Thanks so much!
DL

A file backup only backs up files/folders. The disk/partiton backup also contains the partition structure and the MFT as well as the boot track information. You can not sucessfully restore a working system from a file/folders backup.

Again, I would suggest restarting from scratch on the external USB3 drive. You would have to move the data off of it that you want to keep, but you then could use the Windows command line utility "diskpart" to clean the drive, and then use Windows Disk management to partiton and format the drive again. The fact that you could successfully format the partition using less than the reported max capacity points to problems with the way your system is seeing the drive in Windows, and could be corrected (possibly) by "cleaning" the drive and starting over.
