Is somebody using an USB3 disk to store atih 2011 backups? Please help.
I have just bougth an USB3 disk docking station and a PCIExpress-USB3 card (NEC-Renesas chip).
I wished to use the disk to store my backups.
I have had lots of troubles and the PCIE card looks to be the culprit.
Before going on troubleshooting, and eventually buying a new PCIE-USB3 card, I need to know if all this efforts make sense.
If somebody is using, successfully, a similar configuration (USB3 disk with atih 2011) I will go on; otherwise I will connect the docking station to an USB2 (slow) port.
Please, give me a feedback. It will be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot.
I have an Icy Box USB3 docking station with a standard SATA disk connected via usb3 cable to an USB3-PCI express card into my desktop.
The USB3-PCI express card is a bulk solution based on a Renesas (NEC) USB3 controller.
Windows says it is a Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller.
I am using version 2.1.27.0 of drivers.
I could start buying an ASUS USB3-PCI express card.
May you tell me the name and the version of your USB3 drivers?
If they work for you, to backup with atih, they should work for me too.
Actually I can backup, but I always have validation errors.
Thanks again.

TI Recovery CD:
The last version of 2011 and all of 2012 provide support for usb3. The drivers are already included.
Windows 7: Asus Laptop
My usb3 controller is Fresno Logic.

I'm using an ASUS P6T motherboad on Win 7 Pro, 64-bit. Added to the system is a StarTech
PEXUSB3S2 USB 3.0 PCIe add-in card. The driver was downloaded from the StarTech website and is
version 2.0.34.0 (current release) By Renesas Electronics (NEC). This USB3 connection goes to a Vantec NexStar 3 (NST-
380S3-BK) external hard drive enclosure containing a Seagate 750 GB SATA drive (ST3750525AS).
Using TrueImage 2011, build 6942 (as well as the previous build) this works very well. I only do full
backups, both manually run and scheduled. Absolutely no failures or problems noted. Comparing this
arrangement I find that full backups are considerably faster than USB2 for a similar file.
Best regards,
Bruce
Edit: Actual Test results:
USB 3, 33.5 GB, 17 minutes
USB 2, 34.4 GB, 42 minutes (this was completed somewhat earlier thus the file size difference)

Bruce, how have you tested your restores off the USB3 drive? We had that and the backup looked great but the restore failed. Which makes the backup pointless.

Thanks to everybody for the replies.
I understand that my hardware/software configuration should work, but it does not.
BTW my MOBO is an ASUS P6T, as Bruce's one.
To Scott Anderson: you are right, backup throgh USB3 was great, but validating it throgh the same USB3 port is impossible. Backup was valid, anyway.
At this point I will give Renesas drivers 2.0.34.0 a chance.
If it does not work, I will replace the PCI express USB3 card.
I will post my results on this thread.
Thanks again.

I have seen different driver versions used on various manufacturing sites. I have a friend that has a card provided by Vantec (Part # UGT-PC312) and their driver is (Renesas Electronics also) v.2.0.26.0 dated 3/9/2011. I would highly recommend that you check the web site of your manufacturer to see what they suggest. These folks commonly customize these files to meet their specific requirements.
When I create a backup I also include the validate option. This has always indicated successful.
Prior to doing the restore I created a fresh backup using TrueImage 2011, build 6942. I then uninstalled TrueImage 2011 and re-booted. Shut down ZoneAlarm Pro and disabled Kaspersky antivirus software. Installed TrueImage 2012, build 6131 and the PC blue screened. Being discouraged at this point I decided to restore the image rather that spend the time to troubleshoot it. I was 'somewhat' interested in trying the restore anyway. Restore was successful. This is the first time I have had this issue with any version of TrueImage, going as far back as version 8.
When I installed the card in the ASUS P6T I used the second slot from the bottom (PCIe Gen 2), (the bottom slot is a PCI slot and cannot be used with this card).

I am able to use my USB3 external HDD for back and recovery using USB3 speed.
ATIH 2011
ASROCK 880GXH/USB3 with fresco logic controllers
WIN 7 64bit
I created a winpe.wim image adding the fresco logic drivers (both of them controller and hub FLXHCIC and FLXHCIH) then with acronis PP using the customize winpe.wim as source I created an acronis.wim then I created and ISO by the command oscdimg and I burned it on a CD.
With this ISO I am bale to recover whole disks, partions or single files form my external HDD by USB3 connection.
2 VERY IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) even if my system is 64bit the winpe image must be x86 32bit otherwise acronis is not able to create a working acronis.wim file
2) FRESCO LOGIC DRIVERS must be 32bit and the folder, from where they are added to the original wimpe.wim, must include the sys and cat version too.
In this way i solved the problem that bothered me for long time. Not to be able to recover my file using the USB3 speed.

SOLVED!
I have replaced my bulk PCIExpress-USB3 card (based on NEC-Renesas chip) whith an Asus U3S6 card.
This card has the same NEC chip (made in Japan instead of China) and an older firmware, but it works fine.
I use the drivers downloaded from the Asus site.
My troubles were evidently due to bad hardware.
My initial fear of compatibility issues between Renesas drivers and Acronis filter drivers has gone.
Now I am able to use the USB3 disk from both Windows and the Acronis Rescue Media 2011 (build 6868) at full speed.
Backing up at USB3 speed is amazing.
Atih 2011 (build 6868) works very well with USB3 (using the NEC-Renesas chip, at least).
I have tried the latest build (6942), called for better USB3 support; but its Rescue Media didn't recognize my hardware RAID5 disk: so I went back to build 6868.
Thanks to all: without your suggestions, I was going to go back and use USB2 for my backup disk. It would have been a shame.
