The specified file does not exist

Thread needs solution

A few days back I got a notification that my backup did not complete. Today I finally had time to check it out. I tried to run the backup and got the subject error message: The specified file does not exist. There is nothing else provided. I can only assume that it can't find the base (full backup) file. However, the file is there. Does anyone who WHAT file this message is referring to?

I remove my external drive often when I take my laptop off premise. I also had a message earlier (yesterday) that my drive space was getting low so I deleted a backup set from earlier.

I just switched to 2015 a few weeks back. I was previously on 2011.

I am configured for a full backup after every 6 incremental backups

I am also configured for auto cleanup after 14 days.

I have attached two screen shots of the error message and my file list.

Your assumption is probably right. Try to recover files from the backup and see whether ATI is telling you some version is missing.

Try validating and respond "ignore" to each missing file. Respond to each Ignore request.

Deletion of the oldest chain is due when the oldest chain ((Inc S7) becomes older than 14 daiys.
So the first scheduled deletion will be after Full B3 has been created.

You may need to move or delete some of your prior version backups if you need more storage space.

Well, since the backup won't complete, I can't restore from the backup. Is there NO WAY to tell which file is missing?

I am configured for Incremental backups and the first FULL backup file is present so I am at a loss. I really don't want to have to create an entire new backup but I think that is my only choice.

Chuck,
You mention frequent removal of the target disk. Perhaps Windows was forced to assign a different drive letter to the target disk.
Go the target disk and see if the same drive letter is assigned. When using a usb target disk, it is often best to pre-assign a drive letter such as x or y or z to the target disk before creating the backup task. This type pre-letter assignment enables the insertion of other drives such as flash drives without messing up the Backup as TI is looking for the same exact drive letter that was in use at time of task creation.

If that is the issue and the file exists but in with a different drive letter, you can use the task edit options and use the MOVE OPTION and point the task to the new location which has the new drive letter.

The task log can be helpful about telling you the path and file name to what it could not find. YOu would also get this kind of message if the target disk was not recongnnized as being connected.

I am 99% sure that the target disk is the same (E:). Drive E: is shown in Acronis back up file listing. Unfortunately, I can't stop the current backup from running so I can't check the settings. I am very frustrated by this. I have tried many many times to Stop and confirm Yes but the backup appears to keep running. I can't access anything else.

I cant' get to the Task Log either with the back up running.

Is this a "cloud" backup where you are sending your data to the web? or is this an internal backup to an internal disk?

When you attempt to stop a backup, there is no pause command. It is either run or stop ande stop prevents the backup from completing.

During an internal backup, you should be able to use your computer normally but much slower response.

This is an external HDD backup. I can't stop it from running. I hit Stop and then Yes to confirm the stop but it reverts back to a running mode.

Kill Acronis to stop the backup. Delete the database folder under C:\programdata\Acronis\TrueImageHome. Reboot and restart ATI.
Add the existing backup files to ATI, then validate the backup.
