Stuck Processing in TIH Clone

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to clone to an external USB drive. I've done this dozens of times before. TIH is stuck - no progress for an hour - on Processing after choosing Next for the Source disk with the Clone selection.

Latest version/build of TIH 2011 (first thing I checked, Update 2 Build 6868) and even turned off Distributed Link Tracking service because others with this symptom say that helps.

Processor is chewing on it - the proc monitor has CPU activity and the fan is kicked on. Something is going on in the background, just not what I want - progress.

Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks for anyone who can offer some help.

I found another post about running the Clone from a Bootable version of ATIH and that seems - so far - to be working. Never did it this way before.

Marc,
When restoring or cloning a system disk, the preferred method and recommend method is to do so when booted from the TI Bootable Media Recovery CD.

Rather than putting the target in an alternate location for cloning, you will have a better success rate if you remove the old disk and put the the new blank target in its place. Put the old disk in an alternate location and then do the clone from the old to the new using the CD. Afterwards, shutdown and first reboot with only the new clone installed. Old disk should not be attached during first boot. This type clone is called a reverse clone and if you are cloning a Thinkpad, it is the only method that will work.

Many of us prefer not to use the clone feature but do a full backup of contents of the entire disk and then restore each partition independently onto a new disk. Restoring a backup is much safer as the old disk is not attached and at no risk. Click on the tan colored link in my signature below for more info.
