suddenly requiring activation

I'm now getting a screen that says activation required, all activities except restore not available. This is odd because I haven't changed computers, the product has always been activated and there is no reason for this message, and when I click on the activation now button, I get a brief flash and then the same message. I also get an update now message so I went ahead and updated, same story. Update seems to have worked fine. I'm supposed to be setup to do an entire pc update but it looks like the last interim update was two weeks ago.
