System boots OK, but the login screen is non-operable

I have cloned a system drive and restarted the system from the clone. I have done this many times before on other disks, but this time the new system boots OK but when it gets to the login screen, the keypresses are not echoed in the login space, nor is there any further interaction with the keyboard. The mouse is interacting but clicking on any button is ignored.
I seem to remember that there is some low-level stuff needed sometimes to make a system fully operable. Acronis will have put a MBR. The only notes I can turn up are addressing the problems where the system does not boot at all.
I have searched around and found many references to systems which would not boot for some reason or another, but this is just one step beyond.
