Taskbar notification area icons

Thread needs solution

Help says, "During most of the operations, special indicator icons appear in the Windows taskbar notification area (the right portion of the status bar with the clock). If you mouse over the icon, you will see a tool tip indicating the operation's progress or state. Right-clicking on the icon opens a shortcut menu where you can change the operation's status or cancel the operation if necessary. This icon doesn't depend on the main program window being open. It is present for background execution of scheduled backups as well."

I used to have this useful feature. Several days ago my antivirus provider had to work on my computer. They ran several processes, including Registry cleanup. Once they were done, my icon was missing. I tried to restore it uninstalling and re-installing (there was no Repair option available). I still do not have the icon.

Can anyone advise me on how to restore the icon?

Run the cleanup utility (link below) and reinstall fresh. Do read and follow the instructions provided in the KB article.

Encountered same problem after updating to latest build.
Followed the recommendations posted by GroverH.
After re-install the notification area icon did re-appear but disappeared after a reboot and has not been seen since. :(

You might check this link and see if this helps. Use the task custimization as shown in his capture.

Thanks GroverH.
I already have "Show icons and notifications" set for all tasks in the notification area.
Even when ATIH is running its icon does not show in the notification area.

I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro X64. That may be a factor. :(

Hairy Scot,
Maybe the post #7 inside that link running Cccleaner might work. Then restarting the TI install program and chooseing the REPAIR OPTION might be easier than a full uninistall and reinstall. It might be something worth trying for those having icon issues.

Thank you very much for the link above. Several users seem to have this problem.

Below are 2 links that describe how to rebuild the icon and thumbnail cache in Win 8 (1st link) and Win 7, Vista, XP (2nd link).

These article are promoting a third party app but do describe how to accomplish the same task without the app. Depending on a users skill level the app could be of benefit to some.

Those experiencing icon/thumbnail issues might wish to try these methods as a possible solution to solve such issues.
