Test Disk Recovery to portable 1 TB USB connected HD - From a new user

Hopefully Grover H has a guide with step by step diagrams walking me thru the process of testing a validated disk backup on another external HD. I assume that this can be accomplished from either TI 2014 on my computer or with boot disk thru CD drive. Both recognize my portable HD.
When disk image is recovered on portable HD, is it read only or is there more flexibility?
