TI 2014 Build 6688 - Can't Build WinPE 5.0 Rescue Media

Thread needs solution

I have the WinPE 5.0 ADK (Windows 8.1) installed - freshly install I might add. I went to build a new Acronis Rescue Media using the latest WinPE Builder installed with build 6688, and it complains that WinPE Builder must run on a system with 4.0 ADK installed.

Exact message is: "To be able to modify WinPE 4.0 images, install Acronis WinPE ISO Builder on a computer where Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) in installed."

I just checked the Acronis FAQ's and it says WinPE 5.0 (Win 8.1) is supported since build 6614. See: https://kb.acronis.com/content/46185

So why is this version complaining? Am I missing something?

Thanks !!
Jim

Try to build a MustangPE based USB. It is very easy and much more convenient, in particular if you store your images on the network, but also because it contains a simple file management system that is quite convenient. See the stickies.

Pat L - Thanks... I'll give it a try. I would still like a basic 32-bit Win8.1 Recovery USB. I have a bunch of 32-bit network drivers that work for all the computers and laptops I use bootable WinPE media with. It'll take some effort to create the 64-bit equivalent.

Shouldn't the Acronis basic WinPE build process work with WinPE 5.0?

James,

I can confirm that you should be able to build a WinPE 5.0 (8.1 ADK) disk using TI build 6688. The media add-on has not been updated for build 6688. You need to install the add-on for build 6673. You probably already have that done. Your problem may relate to the ADK installation. Sometimes when you uninstall the 8.0 ADK and then install the 8.1 ADK, Microsoft leaves behind the 8.0 folder in C:\Program Files or Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits. The left over 8.0 folder does not contain WinPE. TI sees the 8.0 folder and tries to use it. This results in the error you are seeing. If you have the 8.0 folder, delete it and try again. TI should then see the 8.1 folder and use it.

You also have the option of using the 32 bit version of MustangPE for use with an ADK. It will work for the 8.1 ADK. Just follow the link to my website in my signature below.

I installed the Media Add-on for 6688. I checked the ADK directories... only thing I have is C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1 So it looks like that installed correctly. Still get the Acronis WinPE Builder error that seems to be looking for WinPE 4.0

I can't find the older Add-On for 6673. Acronis doesn't seem to provide links for older builds except for the main TI program.

Well... In the Acronis WinPE ISO Builder "Help" screens it clearly indicates Windows 7 (PE 3.0) and Windows 8 (PE 4.0) are supported. It makes no mention at all about WinPE 5.0 or Windows 8.1. They may claim it works in their FAQ, but documentation and program behavior indicate otherwise. Perhaps they included the wrong build of the ISO Builder in this release. I won't waste any more time on this. I will install the older ADK and see if it works.

I uninstalled the 8.1 ADK, reinstalled the 8.0 ADK, verified that C:\Procram Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0 is all that was there. Verified that it runs fine and can create the necessary c:\winpe_x86 files. Yet the Acronis PE Builder still complains that the required ADK (WINPE 4.0) is not installed. Something else is broken. I'm stumped. Any chance that running this from a Win 8.1 64-bit machine is the issue? In the past I've always run the Acronis WinPE ISO Builder on a Windows 7 32-bit environment.

You need to point the program to C:\winpe_x86\Media.

As my memory serves me, that was the very first thing I tried. But I'll do it again just to be sure.
