TI2010 and a Seagate 2 or 3 TB external USB 3.0 drive

Thread needs solution

Thinking about replacing 500GB external with 2 2 TB Seagate STBV2000100 or 3 TB STBV3000100. Not sure if my Windows 7 or Acronis 2010 will handle? I believe the issue may be around sector size and then I have seen times where Acronis recovery CD will not handle certain drives. Then I would also get a 3.0 controller to add to PC. So 3.0 adds more possible problems.

Oops after some research I find the 3 tb is out- sorry. GUID Partition Tables (GPT) not supported in 2010, maybe that would be a reason to go to 2013, well if it is supported in 2013, I will go check. Looks like 2TB is okay, but for $20.00 more I get that extra 1TB, which I don't really need.

Jerrold,

With 2013, you get native support of Basic GPT disks. Dynamic disks are only supported with the additional Plus Pack, but it doesn't look like you need this.
If your new disk is a boot disk, you will need UEFI capable motherboard and WIndows 7 64bit to make a GPT disk bootable.

Keep in mind that the 3TB externals may not be GPT. I have several and they're still seen as standard MBR-type drives.

Would that mean they were partitioned, I thought I read somewhere MBR couldn't handle 3TB, but I don't keep on top of this changing environment as well as I use to.
