TIH 2011 - Problem with automatic cleanup

Thread needs solution

Hi, I still encounter Problems with TIH 2011 option "Automatic delete archives older than ...

So I specified the following for my scheduled backup task: Create a full version after 10 differential versions Delete versionchains older than 8 days.

This don't seem to work reliable since a backup file exists older than that period. When I click "Browse all version" TIH displays that particular backup-file marked as available for recovery. Appreciate any help on how to trouble shoot. Thanks Bodo

If you are not using the most current update to the 2011 version, I suggest you install the newest update as it had fixes for backup deletion and retention.

The option which seems to work best is to keep x number of backup chains based on a number of chains rather than based on number of days or disk space.

Try a new task based on keeping x number of backup chains.  Adjust the 6 and 4 examples to your needs.

Thanks GroverH,

I followed your sugestions with my uptodate installation of TIH.2011

I applied the option Store no more than x recent version chains to my existing task, but

when a task was completed there are still more than specified backup files in the folder.

Automatic cleanup is enabled here.

bvu007,

It is possible that some file are not correctly tracked by ATI any longer. Do this:
- move the TIB files you want to keep to another directory on the same disk (to avoid a long copy),
- delete the task from within ATI (ATI will complain it couldn't delete all the files, insist)
- create a new backup task with Grover's recommended settings.

If you change any key setting like the backup scheme, retention rules, name or destination, you'd better repeat the above. It is not that ATI cannot handle the changes, it is that the result of these changes can create confusing situations and put the user in a weird spot when s/he needs to restore.

Thanks Pat L, but it seems that automatic cleanup is not working here.

I followed the instructions, so my new daily scheduled backup task (differential) now has
the following settings:
- Create a full version after every 6 differntial vesions
- Store no more than 5 recent version chains

However in the directory when ATI stores the tib files I have now:
1 full version, as of 12/20
6 differential versions between 12/20 and 12/25
1 full version as of 12/26
2 differential versions between 12/27 and 12/28

So from the settings above ATI should cleanup some of the tib files at least the ones
stored between 12/20 and 12/25

Also I checked ATI event log but there are no errors loged by that particular backup tasks.

Bvu007,

To clear a possible confusion up: a chain is made of a full and its 6 differential. So you have to wait unti ATi has completed its 6th full, then it will delete the first full + 6 differentials (ie the first chain), and you will be left with 5 fulls. 4 of them will have their 6 differentials, and the last one will be followed by 6 new differentials.

Do not attempt to use ATI for anything other than disk imaging, i.e. stay away from secure zones, auto-delete of image files, encrypted backups, and so on.

My ATI backup batch files provide fine-grained control of any number of backup generations ("chains," in your terminology). You would be well advised to use them instead of trying to do it in ATI. See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/27989 .

Ok thanks Pat L for the clarification, I was a bit confused about the meaning of "...version chains ".
Now I modified my backup settings and when the task completed it works just fine, as you described it.
But one more thing: I noticed that when ATI creates a full backup it starts with a new tib-file and deletes
the first in chain after the backup is complete. That might cause a disk full error if your diskspace is limited.

Again thanks!

Exactly! ATI will first create the first full of the following backup chain BEFORE deleting an older chain. Make sure you have enough space for that "extra" full.
