TIH 2013 suddenly confusing/losing backups

Thread needs solution

I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this. I've recently started having really odd issues with my backups. The external usb drive I was using to store backups of my two drives was sounding a bit noisy and tired, so I bought a new 2TB external drive. I thought I'd start over with the two backup jobs I had set up, so I deleted both and set up two new ones, single full backup for my system drive and an incremental backup for my data drive. I set both backups to run and left it over night. Next day as expected, both backups had completed but acronis was stating there was 4 versions of the system drive backup and 3 of the data drive. I ignored this at the time, but today I've just opened acronis and in the backup settings window it said the data drive backup had not been started yet? I browsed for the backup file manually and tried to add it to the settings window but it wouldn't let me, it thought it was already there. So, I deleted the settings for the data drive backup and tried to add it again, which it did, but lost the backup settings. Then I noticed it was stating that both the system drive backup and the data drive backup were both exactly 632GB, which is the SUM of both the system drive and data drive backups. I thought I'd try to restore the data drive backup to another drive to check its integrity, and when I asked it to restore it asked me which of three versions I wanted to restore. Looking at these three versions, it was clear that one of them was the data drive image I actually wanted to restore, the second version was actually the partitions of the system drive (a totally different backup) and the third was an image of an sd card I imaged months ago but deleted the settings (backup file still exists on the data drive). What on earth is going on? Why did it suddenly "lose" the backup file of the data drive and how is it getting them mixed up like this?? Can anyone help?

I don't know that anyone can give you a difinitive answer or fix. At this poiint, in my opinion, you would be better off to
Un-install.
Run the TI Cleanup Utility (figure 4 my signature)
Re-install the lat est builld for 2013
Create new backup tasks.

Here is some suggested backup schemes which will perform automatic cleanup, based on how many chains you tell the program to keep, during the task creation phase.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme.Keep 4 versions (chains). The 4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs..
GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains. The 6-4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.
Note/example: If rule selected is "Delete older than 7 days" is selected, deletion will not begin until the first chain (7 files) is completed and entire chain is older than 7 days.
GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains. The 2-2 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.
