TIH and DD do not work as described!

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image Home 2011 (Build 5519), Plus Package and Acronis Disk Director 11 Home (Build 11.0.216). There are several issues which makes these programs unusable for me. First some information about my hardware and OS:
- OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit (logged in as administrator)
- CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090 T
- RAM: 8 GB
- System Volume C:\ is on a SSD

The issues:

1. Image-Backup of system volume does not work: It is always terminated with an error message before the end of operation.

2. Installing the Plus Package does not work. Error message: "Failed reading of file" (it does not tell me WHICH file!). (Tried to attach a screen-shot to this message but it does not work either: An HTTP error 0 occurred /upload/js).

3. Creating recovery media on CD from the above programs does not work or the created recovery CD does not work when booting from it.

4. Several other issues with inconsistent and "fuzzy" behavior in True Image Home 2011, too many to enumerate them here.

Run chkdsk C: /r as a first step. A reboot will be necessary and then look at the chkdsk results after it finishes.

It would be helpful if you could provide the error message for the image problem described in 1.

I too suspect either a hard disk error problem or an intermittent memory problem. So defintiely try Seekforever's suggestins. If those don't reveal the problem, also, it can be helpful when installing a program that involves drivers, such as ATI, to use msconfig to disable all non microsoft services and startup programs. Then you can restore them after the installation.
I'd try running msconfig, unistalling and then reinstalling, then msconfig again to rstore the startups and services.

This does two things: one ensures that other progs and services won't interfere with proper installation. and two, can reveal is there is a program conflict.

you can read how to use msconfig here:

A reasonable question. I did a bit of Googling and it seems it does but OTOH some reports of false errors mentioned.

Does your SSD drive manufacturer have a set of diagnostics you can run? They might be a better avenue.

I'd try chkdsk in the read-only mode (chkdsk C: )and see what it says. Note that read-only mode is not a great test and does not even look at the "un-used" portion of the disk like /r does.

I have to correct myself: Image-backups do not work at all in TIH. Just now I've tried several times to make an image-backup from a volume F:\ which is on a normal hard-disk (not SSD). Before that I checked the system partition C:\, the source partition F:\ and the target partition Y:\ for errors. All three were error-free. However, the backup always terminated without error messages, only at the end of the backup operation TIH always stated that the backup archive is damaged. See the attached screenshot of the log.

This sounds more like a memory issue. If you have more than one stick of mem in the machine, you mgiht try removing one, then the o other to see if the prob goes away.

Alternatively, run memtest overnight.

Howver, I've had ati2011 report a bad archive several times whent he archive was in fact fine ( I manually validate the particlular backup file and it validated fine). I suspect some other kind of conditions is uyielding a an error code that the end of the program (or the bakup process code) interprets and an invalide archive or it is simply reporting the workng error code string.

Of course I validated the backup archive and it still shows the errors. But I will make the memory test and report the result here.

IF so, then it sounds like it's having a prob with dissk read/write, which can happen if there's an iffy memory spot in the far reaches of memory that most computer operations don't usually touch, but ATI does because it's moving som much data. It's worth testing anyhow just to rule it out and memtest is free from lots of sources.

goodf luck

Memory test is planned for tonight. But, couldn't it be that ATIH has problems with SSDs? Any users here who operate ATIH on a SSD?

I thought the more recent versions did pretty well with them. although they are new enough that lots of companies, including ssd makers don't quite have them down pat yet.

Way to find out is backup up somewhere else and see probs persist. If not, then you can at least know it's def something to to with ati and ssds. But I'm not sure you're at that point yet.

There certainly have been a lot of posts about SSDs and restoring with TI and checking alignments so I'd say that SSDs, in general, are not a problem. OTOH, imaging programs have a habit of getting more into the guts of things and problems can occur with specific hardware pieces.

You could try running Windows imaging and see what it does but I don't think it has a validate function (?) so that doesn't help too much.

The RAM modules had indeed some errors. I replaced them with new ones which now have proved to be error-free. Then I uninstalled ATI2011. But now when I try to reinstall it tells me: "Failed reading the file. Probably you don't have enough rights for this action". I've seldom seen such a stupid error message which doesn't tell me which file and which action!!! And I've never seen a program which makes so many problems when installing and using it!!!

Can anybody tell WHY the installation does not work? I am very annoyed!!!

I always us mscnfig when uninstalling/installing programs that involve drivers, the kernal or other "deep innards".

info on mscnfig con be found here:

You do need admin rights to install properly.

Also if you suspect the install file might be bad, download it again from Acronis.com
