TIHome/WinXP: Additional privilege required to shut down computer after backup

Thread needs solution

TI Home 2009
WinXP Pro SP3

If a user wants to shut down the computer after a backup task, Acronis recommends that a "shutdown -s" command be added to the "After backup process" field of the "Pre/Post commands" settings.

Unfortunately, there's a long-standing bug in the shutdown program which prevents it from working when run by any user with less than "Administrator" privileges. I encountered this problem when I configured my backup task to run under a user in the "Backup Operators" group.

I found a description of the bug and a fix for it here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2006/01/27/518214.aspx

which involves giving the "SeRemoteShutdownPrivilege" privilege to the user ID that's used to perform the backups.

I applied that change and found that it works on my system.

I believe that a better fix would be for Acronis to add the shutdown option to the task itself, which would require only the "SeShutdownPrivilege" which is automatically granted to all ordinary users on XP.
