Tools - Importing and exporting backup settings - Not available!

Thread needs solution

Having decided to try out ATI 2015, the first thing I did, with 2014, was to Export backup settings, in accordance with the link below, covering "Importing and exporting backup settings"

http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATIH2014/#10147.html

Low and behold, after updating, to 2015, I find that "Importing and exporting backup settings" is not available in Tools, or anywhere else, as far as I can see!

So, when the time arrived, for a routine "Differential Backup" of my personal files, what happened was that instead of a Differential Backup, a Full backup occurred! This took several hours, in stead of typically 40 minutes!

Addition! I have now discovered that although Differential Backup, is selected, a full backup is performed, every time; specifically of my files!

Given up, for the time being - Have restored 2014

Hi Brian! We meet again, eh? Seriously, I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment with the upgrade. But at least you were smart and did a backup first. Uhhh, I wasn't as smart... It's a long story and I posted it on this forum under "Try & Decide Feature Removed". I'm still in a quandary as to the best way to proceed (i.e. keep 2015 or re-install 2014). I'm not sure why some of these features that we've known and trusted have been so conspicuously removed from this new version. I'm hearing I can no longer sync to my local external HDD too, which is another feature I used a lot. Oh boy!

That's particularly bad news if you've discovered a bug in the software whereby "full" backups are done even if "differential" is selected. I don't blame ya for bailing out. Frankly, I haven't even tried the new version yet b/c I got so distracted by what was missing that I never got around to trying what is there. Maybe later this week... Hope all is well, Friend! -Mickey.

Don't forget, the first image will always be a full no matter whether it is a differential or incremental or chain based task.

Unfortunately all my 'imported' tasks were made with the beta version, so this might not pertain to the RTM, but in the beta although 2014 tasks were imported, they required to be 'converted' into a 2015 task (the option appeared when editing the task). I found the best thing to do was to actually start a new task from within 2015. This is not unique to 2015 (apart from the task conversion option), I always recommend making a new set of tasks for each new version of TI that is released.

Colin, you raised a very interesting point. I'm hesitant to expose my ignorance b/c you and Brian are far more tech savvy than I'll ever be, but the way I understand your comment is: Even if you had differential or incremental backups in 2014, your first such backup in the 2015 version will be a "full" backup anyway. Sounds like 2015 will just start a whole new series of differential or incremental backups, so it has to start with a full backup. As long as folks know that, I suppose it's not too big a deal - but I wonder why the 2015 version isn't backwards-compatible with the 2014 version? Did they completely change up the algorithm or something?

Your logic of establishing new tasks within each new version of TI sounds like experience talking. For less-advanced users like me, I would like the ability to import my old tasks into a new version so I don't have to sort-of reinvent the wheel. But there are probably compelling reasons to just establish new tasks when you move to a new version. I learn a little bit more every single time I read on this forum. :)

Brian, you probably knew about what Colin mentioned (first 2015 backup is a "full" even if you had old differentials in 2014), but is there any chance that is what happened to you? I doubt it b/c you're typically very precise and you specifically said that a "full" backup is performed EVERY TIME even though you are requesting differential backups. That sounds like a very serious bug - how could that possibly slip past?

Thanks Colin for your helpful insights on this forum! Thanks Brian for always pointing out things that may be helpful for other forum members. I'm learning from you guys, so thanks for the great work!
