Transferring System to SSD Disk

Thread needs solution

Can anyone tell me if what I'm doing is going to work or if there are any pitfalls.

I have a Windows 7 x64 with 2 x RAID 0 disk system and I'm planning on upgrading my disks to 2 x SSD RAID 0. The old RAID is 2TB and my new SSD RAID will be 1TB.

The partitions on my disk are: DELL OEM, Recovery and C: System in that order.

I've reduced the size of my C: partition so the total size of the first 3 partitions will fit onto the SSD.

If I back my whole disk (including the empty partition) will True Image be able to resize it on my new SSD disk? i.e. ignoring the unused partition on the end.

One reason I want to backup the whole disk is that on another Dell I had when I transferred only selected partitions I ended up with boot problems. The other is that I have certain software packages which store license info near the MBR. Plus it seems easiest anyway.

Sorry, I think I answered my own question. I found an article which goes into it. Seems it should work ok which is good although I'm still a bit nervous!

Mark,

As you are using a Dell, I would be inclined to make a complete disk image first, then clone your old drive to the new one. If you decide to go the clone route I would do this from the recovery CD so that Windows isn't running at the beginning of the task. I'm not sure about your RAId though, I think I would be inclined to break the RAID and remake it once the clone/image has been completed.

Which Dell model do you have?

Hi Colin

It's a Studio XPS 8100.

My problem is the lack of SATA ports - only 4. My RAID uses 2, DVD 1 and my internal data/backup disk the last. I used to use a eSATA drive but had so many problems with eSATA and USB is too slow for the large volumes I have although I'd consider it if there was some good reason for doing so.

Anyhow, with the lack of ports I was inclined to go the backup/restore route rather than the simpler clone unless I've missed a trick here?

Are there any advantages of doing a clone apart from saving time? Does it setup the disk differently or handle RAIDs better?

Thanks
Mark
