Trouble cloning Sony S Series Vaio laptop harddisc

Thread needs solution

Hi,
I'm using AHTI 2012 2.1 to replace my new laptop's 640GB hard disc with a 256GB SSD. The Vaio has UEFI enabled and the source HDD is in the GPT format.

It has the following partitions in this order:

- GPT area 1MB (not really a partition in the truest sense)

- Reserved (FAT32) 260Mb
- Recovery Partition Image (NTFS) 19.15GB
- Reserved (FAT32) 260Mb
- Normal Windows 7 System Disc (NTFS) ~619GB

As it is not possible to clone in the laptop I've moved both HDD and SSD to a PC and used the AHTI 2012 recovery USB media. I've tried both Automatic proportional disc cloning and Manual (where I ensure the first 4 areas are the same size as the HDD on the SSD) disc cloning. Afterwards with the SSD in the laptop I power on using the normal "Power" button and the main OS is booted fine, and quick which is great...

However the issue I have is that both methods stop the 2nd "Assist" power on button from working on the laptop. When pressed it turns on and gives a boot error that it can not find the "Sony VAIO Care Recovery" partition to boot. I can post more specific error messages and codes when I get home tonight.

Has this problem been seen before? Any thing else I could try? Unfortunately I don't know how Sony have implemented this 2nd power on button. I guess I could do it the hard way and perform a diff of both GPT areas on both discs.....

Thanks for any help offered.

Don't Clone. Perform a full disk Backup, selecting the disk checkbox rather than individual partitions. Backup to another HD such as to an external HD. That backup will include all those partitions.

One of those partitions, other than the OS partition, may be the actual boot partition, which is why it's important to include it. Also, the Sony VAIO Recovery requires one of those additional partitions.

If you don't plan to keep the Recovery partition, and/or if you want to make the OS partition the boot partition, you can perform those changes now on the HD with third-party tools prior to performing the Backup and Restore. I did that on my Dell laptop: I removed the Recovery partition to free up 20 GB, and made my Windows OS partittion bootable.

Restore the backup image to the SSD. You'll want to follow the procedure to restore to a smaller drive. The appropriate Grover's Guide, as one reference, may be this one: http://forum.acronis.com/system/files/mvp/user285/guides/tih2012-restor…
