Trouble opening backups in 2012

Thread needs solution

I have an archived set of backups that I made with TI 2012. I moved them on to a backup external hard drive and got rid of the item in the list of backups in TI.

Now I want to see if I can do something like consolidate this archival set of backups. In the "Backup and Recovery" tab, I select "Browse for backup". When I select the last file of the backup series and hit OK, Acronis gives me no feedback. The UI becomes unresponsive for a while, then becomes responsive again. On task manager I can see that Acronis is using one CPU core at 100% for about 5 minutes, then it stops doing anything.

This used to be so easy with the old UI. Is what I am trying to do just impossible with 2012 and beyond?

Can anyone offer me some tips for getting this to work?

Thanks,
Ben

Ben,
I have seen similar behavior. Usually after the delay, Acronis seems to be fiinished doing whatever and is waiting for the user to make a selection such as select a file or click ok, etc.

Unfortunately I'm not getting any response. I can open the files by browsing to them in explorer but I can't get Acronis to open them in its main "Backup and Recovery" screen. This is supposed to work, right? Does this work in general? When I try to open a backup, it's supposed to add the backups to the big list right?

One method would be:
From within the TI program, browse for backup to the specific file. Select or highlight the file. At the bottom of the screen, there should be a "Add to backup list" option. Clicking that option should make the backup appear as a task on your "My backups' menu of tasks.

Yup, that does not work. I can't open any of my backups using that method.

Okay, so I finally figured it out. Here's what happened: I used Acronis to make backup jobs. I copied the files from those backup jobs into other directories or disks. I didn't remove the backup jobs from my list in TI. So when I tried to open the copied backup job files, Acronis must have recognized that they were essentially the same thing as the jobs which were already in the list (even though they were in different locations).

I don't think this is ideal behavior because it means I have to erase my backup jobs in order to work with duplicates. Also, there is no error message, just a silent failure.

Can you guys tell me the best way to make a "bug report"?

Thanks,
Ben

I sent in the following message in the feedback web page:

I used TI to make backup jobs. I copied the files from those backup jobs into other directories or disks. I didn't remove the backup jobs from my list in the TI "Backup and Recovery" tab.

I tried to open the copied backup files by selecting "Browse for Backup" and selecting the last file of the series of backup files. Acronis freezes up for 2 minutes, then unfreezes but uses one cpu core at 100% for about 5 minutes. Then nothing happens.

When I deleted the original backup jobs from the big list in "Backup and Recovery", I was able to select "Browse for Backup" and the backups in the files would be added to the job list, as desired.

Acronis must have recognized that the files I was trying to open were essentially the same thing as the jobs which were already in the list (even though they were in different disk locations).

I don't think this is ideal behavior because it means I have to erase my backup jobs in order to work with duplicate backup files. Also, there is no error message, just a silent failure. It would be great if Acronis gave an error message such as: "can not open backup files, a copy of this backup already exists". Or change TI to allow two sets of files generated by the same backup job to be opened as separate jobs in the TI job list.
