True Image 2012 won't install properly
I'm trying to run this program on a computer with Vista Home Premium (SP2). The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.40 GHz, 32-bit operating system (2GB RAM).
When trying to install ATIH2012_7119_en-US.exe, I receive the message, "Installation has failed", "Fatal error during installation". When I follow the link to the "Knowledge Base Article", I am taken to a webpage that says, "We are sorry. There is no information about this error available now.".
I then tried to uninstall it, and received the message, "An error has occurred during the uninstallation. If the error persists, please contact Acronis support team. "Installation has failed" "Fatal error during installation". When I follow the link to the "Knowledge Base Article", I am taken to a webpage that says, "We are sorry. There is no information about this error available now.".
After several attempts, it did appear that I was able to install the software, but when I tried to run the Disc Clone feature, I received the message, "Cannot initialize Backup Archive Explorer. Please reinstall Acronis True Image Home". I then went on to try making a clone of my C drive anyway. It looked like it was going to work, but after I chose the drives, etc. it just failed and shut down (with no further explanation).
I was not able to completely uninstall the program using Window's "Remove Programs" feature, so I used the "Acronis True Image Home 2012 Cleanup Utility". This appears to have removed completely, but when I then reinstalled it, I had all the same exact problems.
If it helps in troubleshooting my problem, I did originally install the trial version of the software. When I realized that the one feature that I wanted was only available in the purchase-version, I downloaded that. Also, it looks like you might have changed versions just as I was starting to do this - the three versions that I've downloaded are:
ATIH2012_trial_en-US.exe
ATIH2012_6131_en-US.exe
ATIH2012_7119_en-US.exe

Thanks for the reply. When I was working on this problem last night, I received the message, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance". After a little internet searching, I found an article on how to turn this feature back on.
After that, I was able to apparently install True Image 2012 properly, but I still have a problem. When attempting to run "Clone Disk", everything goes fine, all the way through the last step (it lets me choose the Source Disk, then the Destination Disk, then I click "Finish"). A box then pops up saying that the operation has started, but within 30 seconds or so, another box pops up saying that the operation has failed. The program then shuts down with no additional info.
The Destination Disk that I'm using is a new 500GB hard drive that's mounted in a portable hard drive enclosure (that connects via USB). I did properly format the hard drive (per the instructions that came with the enclosure) - it is recognized as a drive by my system.

Pat L:
I forgot to post - I will try all of your suggests as soon as I can (hopefully tonight after work...).

THom,
Are you doing the cloning from Windows, or from the recovery CD? The latter choice is the correct answer...

It sounds like that's probably my problem - I was trying to do the cloning from Windows. In looking at the user's guide (ATIH2012_userguide_en-US-1.pdf) - it appears that the info for cloning a hard drive starts on page 178 (#8.4 - "Cloning a Hard Disk"). I don't see anything there about using a recovery CD. Are there step-by-step instructions anywhere for doing this?
In looking at the user guide, I do see one other thing that I wasn't doing - it suggests that the drive to clone should be mounted in the USB enclosure and the new drive should be mounted to it's future permanent position. I hadn't done that yet...
Thanks,
Thom

To create a recovery CD, choose the media builder within ATI, or download the bootble ISO from your Acronis.com account and burn it *as an ISO* (not a simple file copy) on a blank CDR

Thanks so much for your help Pat.
I've never used a recovery CD before. I assume that after I create the CD in the manor that you outlined, I leave it in the drive and when I restart the computer, it will boot from that CD?

OK - I used Media Builder to create a recovery CD. Then I swapped the two hard drives - I put the SATA drive that I want to clone into a USB enclosure, and mounted the new SATA in the hard drive bay inside the computer. I then started the computer with the recovery CD inserted. When it started, I chose "Acronis True Image Home".
When I chose the "Clone Disk" option, everything appeared to go well. I chose the options for cloning, and the process started. Under "Operation Status", it showed "2 of 4 - Copying Partition", and showed that 8 minutes remained. After several minutes, it showed that 7 minutes remained. Then after changing to "3 of 4 - Copying Partition", it showed "Operation Failed" with no additional information...

UPDATE: I was wondering if using a USB enclosure for one of the drives might have been my problem, so I mounted both drives and used Serial ATA 2.0 cables to connect them to the board. I still had the exact same problem outlined above (Operation Failed" when the timer showed 7 minutes remaining).

What partitions do you have on that disk?
Can you you do a disk and partition backup of the original on some USB disk successfully?

When I formatted the new 500GB drive, I didn't add any additional partitions to it (it showed as just one large space). Now it appears that when I attempted to do the Clone Disk, it changed this (see below). Here's the current info on both drives:
The drive that I'm trying to copy is partitioned as listed below:
Local Disk C: 24.2GB free of 139GB
Recovery D: 3.86GB free of 9.95GB
The new drive (the one that I'm trying to move everything to) is now:
25.0GB free of 31.1GB
(note that this is a 500GB drive)
In answer to your other question, before attempted this, I did do a backup of the current drive (onto a Western Digital 2TB USB External Hard Drive) - the backup appears on that drive as a 98,707,498KB .tib file.

Does anyone have any further suggestions for fixing the problem that I'm having using the disk cloning feature? I just thought I'd double-check before requesting a refund...

Instead of cloning the drive, you could leave your new SATA hard drive installed and connect the WD 2TB USB external drive to the system and boot from the recovery disk. Then do a restore from the external drive to the newly installed hard drive. You can modify the partition structure of the new drive during recovery. I find that this works better than doing a clone operation, but yields the same results. Be sure that the backup you created on you WD USB drive is a full disk based backup before beginning. Also be sure to restore the master boot record as well as the disk signature to the new drive.
Take a look at Grover's guide to doing this here:

I had the same sad experience as other members, with the HD freezing during the installation. When I tried to reinstall, kept getting the msg. that there was another active installation. I used the ATIH clean-up tool, and that baby killed my computer, deader than a door nail! That is the bad news.
The good news is that my backup media saved the day, and I was back up and running after booting with the backup CD. I have been using ATIH for several years, and this is the worst experience ever! Surely Acronis will offer either a fix, or a refund. ATIH 2011 never looked so good!
