True Image 2013: backup process hangs (never ends)

I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 installed. I try to backup an external hard disk on my synology NAS. In the middle of the backup process, the backup up hangs suddenly, as if it was waiting for something. nothing happens anymore. No message from Acronis. It never hangs on a specific file. When it hangs, if I cancel the backup to stop it, True Image asks me , if I really want to cancel the process and then hangs again for ever...

True Image 2013 by Acronis doesn't support Windows 8.1 and this is the most probable cause of such behavior.

You might want to upgrade to the latest version Acronis True Image 2015. You can download a trial version of the program and make sure that it works as expected on your hardware.

The ATI2013 users guide implies Windows 8 support!
At least, the "Supported operating systems" section lists Windows 8 (all additions).

 Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2
 Windows Vista SP2 (all editions)

So, Does it or doesn't it, or am I totally misreading something??
