True Image 2013 cannot be installed in Windows XP
Just before the fysical installation of True Image 2013 should start (after having completed the introductory questions and the serial number, and clicked the " proceed" button) the following error message returns:
Installation failed. This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.
I repeatedly downloaded True Image 2013 again from www.acronis.com, and then tried to install again; without result.
Thereby I also got these messages:
Windows cannot find "report_sender_standard.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
OR
The system cannot find the file specified
The latter message only if I uncheck the box "automatically activate the product (internet connection required); if this box is checked, the former message is displayed.
See the installation log beneath ...
I hope that somebody can help me very soon. I need to make an image of my system before I leave (in 4 days!!) for a month and take my laptop with me.

I notice one of the install failures points to the TEMP folder, try emptying the contents of this folder and try again.
To get to the correct temp folder, click on the Windows Start and r button, type in %temp%, then delete as many files in this folder as Windows will allow.
If that still doesn't get it to work, run the True Image installer, and right click on the Install menu choice and select 'extract'. Right click on the extracted MSI installer file and select 'run as Admin', continue as normal.

Thanks, Colin B. and Shadowsports,
Just before I read your suggestions, I continued struggling myself and found the cause of the problem, which I could hardly believe. Since the Acronis Knowledge Base showed only ONE comparable case and obviously only one possible cause, viz. a faltering download of the installer, I continued on that lead. I must say, at the time I uploaded my question to this forum I hardly believed in that explanation anymore. But lo! I then found an Acronis suggestion to compare checksum of the downloaded installer file with the one given. I googled, found and installed a handy checksum checker. And, believe it or not, all downloaded copies of the installer had the same checksum that did NOT match the checksum mentioned by Acronis. I then decided to download the installer once again, and this time the checksum matched the one given by Acronis!
And, indeed, this installer worked fine!
It transcends my imagination how it could happen that the first 3 (of 4) copies of the installer, downloaded from the same Acronis page, have an identical checksum mismatch, and that the fourth download matches! Statistically this would be nearly impossible.
Whatever bug or circumstance may have caused this awkward download behaviour, I'm happy that finally everything worked as it should, and that actually the Acronis Knowledge Base was right in the first place with the only suggestion to repeat the download. After all a boost of my faith in Acronis: they really seem to know what can go wrong.
Again thanks to you too, for your willingness to help at such short notice. I will keep your suggestions; who knows I might need them later on ...

E.g. the file with wrong checksum was cached somewhere in between and was served to you each time until it expired.

Yes, indeed, must be the case. But quite awkward that this can happen. I went back to Acronis, for the second and third times, logged in into my account, browsed the website to the place where the file can be found and downloaded from, started the download, and viewed the downloading process, which took a normal amount of time, illustrating that no cached file on my own computer was loaded. Which cache, where, would be involved? Somewhere on an Acronis server? Can hardly believe that they would use such clumsy procedures ...
