True image crashes while creating backup

Thread needs solution

I hope someone can help with a major problem I have with Acronis True Image (V9.0.3854)

I have tried many times to create a backup of My Documents folder.  Everytime either the entire PC crashes or more usually the application shuts down.  This happens after around 5% progress up to around 15% completion.

My Docs size is around 30GB and I have tried saving the backup to both an external drive and the HDD with the same result - There is ample space on both drives.

I have experimented with backing up smaller folders of around 1GB and this is successful.

I am on Windows 5.1 with service pack 3 and all Windows updates installed.  Virus checked and free etc.  I don't have any other problems with the PC and I'm not aware of any other problems with it.

I have attached some of the logs for examination and I hope this might help someone to give me some indication of what the problem might be as I'm struggling!

Many thanks,
Alan

Have you been able to make any other backups? If this backup is attempted withn windows, have you tried doing it with the boot disk (and vice versa)?

Have you tried removing and reinstalling after using msconfig to disable all other progs and serivces that start at start up (excedpt windows services)?

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Alan,

Acronis True Image runs out of system resources on the machine when backing up thousands of files (in one or several folders).

There is an issue with the compression algorithm. To avoid this, in the task options, set the compression level to none.

Try running separate backup tasks, so that the amount of files in a onetime backup will be reduced.

Backup of the whole hard disk drives or partitions should run successfully regardless of the amount of files on the disks. The issue is only with the file backup.

Thank you.

Thanks for the clarification, Mr. Lee.

(by the way, I have the same problem with TI v 10)

I will say that it would be a plus if this info were spelled out explicitly in the manual or the online instructions--as opposed to the customer having to search around in the Forums and get lucky.

Your suggestion did work.

It's a little irritating not to be able to use the compression function with selected file backup, but in these days of cheaper huge external hard drives, it is not a tragedy. The incremental backup will hopefully work without a hitch.

Just a thought...

Do you have tons of files stored in only a few folders under My Documents? Remember that Windows treats the My Documents folder and subfolders thereof as "special folders", and creates lots of MRU streams whenever browsing or accessing files in the "special" My Documents folder. This can significantly slow down the computer if you have tons of subdirectories and files under the My Documents folder, and possibly this could be what is causing problems with ATI when compression is enabled? Anyway, due to OS slowdown issues, I store most of my files in subdirectories "normal" folders located outside of the My Documents folder since it seems that MS never really fixed this particular issue.

I have some "normal" folders which contain hundreds of subfolders and thousands of files, and I have never run into any issues with ATI2009 with compression enabled. Maybe I'm just lucky in that ATI on my system isn't hitting some sort of upper limit re the max number of files in subfolders or whatever. My point is that I try to avoid putting too much stuff in the My Documents folder.
