True Image Home 2010 stopped working: Failed to create the volume snapshot

Thread needs solution

I have bought Acronis “True Image Home 2010” (build 6053) online just a few days ago to use it on my son’s brand new PC running Windows-7 (32 Bits). I’ve built this PC myself and intentionally bought two SATA2 HD drives. On first drive I have created 2 partitions (letters assigned C: and D:) one for the system and another for all other stuff. And on the second drive I haven’t created any partitions, instead I use it as Acrconis secure zone to keep backup archives of the first drive. (You know kids tend to pick all kinds of viruses and worms within the days, so I need quick and safe way to recover the work disk)

After I first installed Windows-7 and some critical drivers (Chipset drivers, Onboard LAN, Onboard VGA, Optical Wireless Mouse, etc…) I have installed “Acronis True Image Home 2010” and successfully created backup archive of the first HD (of its both partitions). I have also burned bootable DVD with the Acronis "Bootable Rescue Media".

Then I’ve installed some other stuff such as “Microsoft Office 2007”, Microsoft “Flight Simulator X” and its “Accelerator”, printer driver, driver for Lincsys USB wireless adapter, and etc…

When I tried to backup first HD (both of its partitions C: and D:) again to the Acrconis secure zone - the “True Image Home 2010” failed to do that with the following error:

Failed to create volume snapshot. (0x70021)
Tag = 0xA5695862AAF8E626
Failed to lock the volume and create a snapshot. (0x102007)
Tag = 0x14181C22EF45ACC7</indent>" module="1" time="1265340295" />

(I have instantly ran check-disk utility on both C: and D: - no problem found.)

As temporary solution I’ve booted from DVD with Acronis "Bootable Rescue Media" and I used this Linux based version of “True Image Home 2010” to backup the first HD (both of its partitions) to the Acrconis secure zone (on second HD).

First, I do not know how reliable such back is. If I need to restore the system from such backup created using “True Image Home 2010” on "Bootable Rescue Media" will it work? Does anyone have such an experience?

Second, as I understand from the error description some other process somehow disturbs the “True Image” to create the volume snapshot. Is there any way to know exactly which process disturbs to create volume snapshot? I could prevent this process to start in order to let the “True Image” to do its job.

Attached is log file:

Thanks,

Hello Mark,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to solve the issue.

First of all thank you for such a detailed description of the issue, it’s very much appreciated. Regarding the issue “Failed to create volume snapshot” the source of it is in the malfunction of the SnapAPI drivers (Acronis drivers). It can happen because of the various reasons, incorrect installation of SnapAPI drivers, file system errors with bad blocks on the drive or some third-party software (e.g. antivirus or another backup solution) block SnapAPI drivers access to the hard disk.

I would recommend you to start investigation with reinstalling SnapAPI drivers. Use the following KB article to download and install them. Don’t forget to reboot computer after installation is complete.

Let me know the results.

Thank you.

Hi Dima,

I have installed the latest SnapAPI driver from the location you’ve provided and it did help. Namely, I could successfully create a new backup. So, “True Image Home 2010” came back to life.

Thanks a lot (большое спасибо),
Mark
