Truecrypt incompatible?

Thread needs solution

Acronis 2012 halts when trying backup a TrueCrypt container/volume file, i.e. that file that contains the encrypted data.
In order for the backup to proceed, it is necessary to dismount the TrueCrypt volume and click “retry” – backup then succeeds .
This is new behaviour from the previous version of the s/w.

I thought 2011 was the same, having said that I thought 2012 was Truecrypt friendly, but then with it encrypted there is always the danger the key may get mangled during the imaging process.

The odd thing is that non stop backup works fine - same behavior for both 2011 and 2012.

I use TrueCrypt and with True Image 2011 I could quite easily do a file backup on the mounted drive without any problems. I have upgraded to Acronis 2012 and if you backup any mounted volumes then acronis just crashes and shuts down. I have spoken to support and sent some log files across so hopefully Acronis will have a solution/fix soon otherwise the product is not suitable for me.

I use Truecrypt and am evaluating True Image Home 2011. Can you please explain if you are backing up the files in the mounted encrypted volume, or the file container that is the mounted volume?

Hi
I backup the files in the encrypted container. This worked ok with 2011. When 2012 came in, it would not backup the container - you had to dismount the drive first, a bit of a pain. I have logged a call with Acronis - Support Case 01285960.

When I use TI 2012 in file backup mode to backup files from my normal drive OR to backup selected files from my Truecrypt drive, all is well. However, when I ask TI to backup a set of files that includes my complete user directory on my main drive AND all the files in my Truecrypt drive, but not the file container itself, then TI hangs. The log shows a "failed to create snapshot for backup" message, but this message is NOT flagged as an error. The backup never gets past the "calculating" stage.

The system is a Lenovo X220 laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

In TI 2011 I have never been able to perfrom a disk / partition backup which I can understand but I have always been able to mount a full encrypted hard disk though truecrypt to say drive (S) for example. I was then able to perform a file backup then select drive (S) from my computer and it has performed a full backup everytime without fail. I upgraded to TI 2012 and you cannot do this as acronis will just crash, give you a stop responding error message and then stop running.

I have also tested a truecrpyt container file rather than a full encrypted disk and exactly the same fault occurs. I have also tried to dismount the disk and then re-mount without success. I have contacted acronis about this from the previous post and sent diagnostic files across twice. The latest response from them is to say I should be able to a file/folder backup through acronis rather than partition backup and has this resolve my issue? well... I know that already hence why I contacted support as its not working with TI 2012 and no the issue still happens because there has been no update to it.

In the mean time I have gone back to using TI 2011 as it important that my data is backed up and I am using a second PC with TI 2012 installed to continue to send acronis support info and test what they say back to me.

My system is a Medion PC using Windows 7 64 Bit.

I too have gone back to 2011 - response on the tree outstanding cases I have with Acronis has been slow.

It has been fairly slow but I dont mind that providing they are working on the issue / trying to resolve it and then provide a fix for us but to receive a response like well it should work via this method (which I already know) and contacted them because it wasn't working was not well received at my end as you might imagine. I have sent another e-mail to my case reference today so I await again for a fix ... hopefully.

Hi
This problem has been fixed in build 6131 - try updating your software. If problem persists, it is a different problem you have then mine :-(

Great to hear,

I'll go ahead and get the upgrade to the 2012 version.

Thanks for the quick update,
Joe
