TrueImageHome hanging at startup for 5-6 minutes with "Not Responding" in title bar

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I've JUST installed the latest update for Acronis True Image Home 2012 (Think it's update 2).

When I start the application, I can see the home screen for around 2 seconds but then the cursor turns into a spinner and "Not Responding" appears in the title bar of the window. It stays like this, not allowing me to do anything at all, for around 5 - 6 minutes before allowing me to use the application as normal.

I tried uninstalling, using the cleaner, and then reinstalling the previous version of True Image Home (update 1, I assume), and that works flawlessly. It's only when I install (/upgrade to) the latest version that I have this problem.

Has anybody else experienced this problem, and more importantly, how would I go about diagnosing or resolving it?

Any information required, let me know.

Regards,
Nick

This might be a red herring (or might not), but the application seems to load up fine, but first screen it lands on is the backup list in the 'backup and recovery' tab, which is where it seems to hang just as it displays a "Loading, please wait" message. This would suggest to me that it's hanging as it searches for the list of backups.

As already mentioned, it takes around 5 or 6 minutes for this list to populate itself and for the application to become responsive again.

I have the same problem. TI takes over 5 minutes to start and immediately becomes "Not Responding." I downloaded latest version, but can't tell you the build number because I can't open and run program. This means if I needed to restore an image, I won't be able to.

DavidK, do you have any external hard drives or removable media attached to your machine when you start True Image?

Yes, I have two portable hard drives attached. Always have had them. No trouble like this with TI before. I've re-started computer several times, unplugged it, etc. Also checked attached drives for errors and found none. Did a virus check of computer; negative.

Nick,
You can disable the startup scan as per this link. Let us know if that helps.

David, it might help you as well. You could try anyway.

You could use the registry edit as you indicated you are having trouble starting program.
Have you checked the Windows Add/remove to see if you have anything listed under
either Acrons
or under Plus
or under Media Add-on

As Nick suggested, try discnnecting the externals for a bootup and see if it makes any difference.

GroverH,

Ace, thanks for the tip, I was hoping there was an option similar to this but couldn't find it. Annoyingly though, it doesn't appear to have fixed the problem. I still get the "Loading, please wait..." screen appear, but then it locks up for a few minutes.

Bizzarely, it was working fine last night. I couldn't figure out what had changed or might be different though. I tried it again this morning however, and it has gone back to not working! I'll keep trying different things to see what might have made the difference and will report back.

I'm reasonably sure this has to be something introduced in Update 2 of True Image 2012 though, as I've reinstalled with Update 1 a few times and haven't experienced the problem once - it's only with Update 2.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to provide more information.

Regards,
Nick

Nick,
Just as a double check, relook in the registry listing to make sure the option reads as .....0 and not as a 1.

Hi GroverH,

Was worth checking, but it reads 0 in the registry. Just to note, that I found the key in HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\ though, but I imagine this is ok.

Also just tried removing all backups from the backup list and disabling "scan computer at startup", just in case it was having a hard time retrieving metadata from one of the backup files, or something like that.

I've tried starting up my machine with the external disks detached, but this hasn't worked either.

Thanks,
Nick

Ah ha! Found it.

It's an external dock that has a card reader built into it. I hadn't physically removed it from the machine, just switched the power button off, but it still appears as an Empty Drive in the Removable Disks section of the Computer page. When disconnected, True Image starts up correctly.

Is there anything I can do to help Acronis fix this for the next update of True Image Home? As it is a problem that only seems to be introduced in the latest version, it seems like a bug to me, and I'd prefer to do what I can to help them resolve it.

Regards,
Nick

Hello all,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

Nick,

Could you please let us know the exact model of your external dock?

We are awaiting for your response.

Thank you.

Nick's question about external drives got me thinking. On occasion, I have had error message relating to a 7-port USB hub into which I have attached two external drives. The error message never seemed to relate to those drives, but to be safe, I replaced the hub. Voila! The problems have resolved. TI seems to be working normally, and I haven't had any strange messages., Before I swapped out the hub, however, I re-booted and shut down my computer several times before the TI error message cleared. In any event, I think I am back up and running. I've tossed the old hub.

Thanks to all for your help.

David

David,
I am using a Belkin 7 port white hub with XP Pro;
plus a 7 port SIIG hub usb2/usb3 hub and none have given me problems but you are certain right and whenever you have choice, always do a direct connect.

Hello all,

Due to unknown reason Nick didn't respond.

DavidK,

Do you agree to provide us with some help in the issue investigation?

We are awaiting for your response.

Grover,

Thank you for your help.

Please see my comment of 5/28/12. I think I found the source of the problem. It has not recurred. So there is no way I can help in an investigation, since I tossed the items I think were causing the problem.

Hello David,

Thank you for your response.

We will try to reproduce the issue in our test lab.

Thank you.
