Two questions, reimaging and booting up a downed pc with a existing full image

Thread needs solution

Question 1
Can you image over an existing full image including OS that is on a external hard drive. Will all files, programs, documents, music files etc that exist on the first image be saved or deleted, if I do a full reimage of the pc to the same external hard drive ?
Question 2
I have a second desktop pc that was given to me but the windows xp OS will not start due to a missing or corrupt root file system 32 hal.dll file, upon start up a prompt says the hal.dll is missing or corrupt. I tried using regcure but it would not replace the hal.dll file. Will the full imaged pc including the xp os on a external hard drive boot up the downed pc by connecting the downed pc to the external hard drive through a usb port?

John:

1. An image is just a file, so as long as you give the new image a different name you can have both on the external hard disk provided that there is enough room on the disk to store both.

2. No. You cannot boot Windows from a USB device. They designed it that way on purpose.

Have you tried some of the troubleshooting steps in this article to solve the hal.dll error? http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
