Unable to backup OS partition from another OS

Thread needs solution

ATIH product: Acronis True Image Home 2010
ATIH build: 6029 (latest available in UK)

Problem:

I have Windows 7 Professional 32 bit installed on drives S: and W:. I am running ATIH from S: and attempting to backup the W: partition. The backup task fails immediately with the error messages "Failed to create volume snapshot" and "Already locked". The W: partition is a logical one.

From ATI log:

Operation with partition 'W:' was terminated.
Details: Failed to create volume snapshot. (0x70021)
Tag = 0xA5695862AAF8E62E
Failed to lock the volume snapshot. (0x10C449)
Tag = 0x14181C22EF45AF57
Already locked.
(code = E0000007)
Tag = 0xABF5B651C7D88E41

I've experienced this on two machines, though on the other machine rebooting solved the problem. On this system, rebooting does not help.

I've tried KB article "6529: Acronis True Image Home 2010 Freezes Windows Vista or Windows 7 Operating System" (http://kb.acronis.com/content/6529) as recommended for this issue, but this breaks ATIH with a message that the SnapAPI is too old, requiring a reinstall of ATIH.

Other information:

The "Generate system report" option within ATIH fails to complete. It also fails to complete when run from ADDH 11.

Please advise how should I proceed.

Are these fully isolated Win 7 installations (i.e., they never see each other), or do they know of each other's existence? What bootmanager are you using?

You can always try one of the bootable media versions. Then you could image both OS partitions at once.

Hi Gary,

> Are these fully isolated Win 7 installations
Each Win 7 installation can see the other as another drive (i.e. the S: Win 7 installation sees the other as a W: drive and vice versa) but only effectively as a data drive so I cannot see why it is locked.

> What bootmanager are you using?
bcd (setup using bcdedit), dropping through to ntldr / boot.ini for XP.

> You can always try one of the bootable media versions...
I am able to backup both OSes from the bootable media version, but this is not an option for scheduled ATIH tasks.

This is something I have done frequently with ATIH in the past (on other computers) - i.e. backing up multiple OSes from scheduled tasks in a particular OS. However that was with ATIH 2009 (and XP/Vista).

I've done some more testing:

1) Backing up the C:\ drive (XP OS): Works.
2) Backing up the D:\ drive (data files only): Fails with the same error ("Already locked").
3) Backing up the S:\ drive (Win 7 OS): Fails with the same error ("Already locked").
4) Backing up the T:\ drive (Win 7 OS): Fails with the same error ("Already locked").
5) Backing up the W:\ drive (Win 7 OS): Fails with the same error ("Already locked").
6) Backing up the H:\ drive (XP OS): Fails with the same error ("Already locked").

No obvious pattern.

(The reason for the different OSes is for (a) testing our software with different OS configurations, and (b) creating SysPrep'd OS drive images for deployment).

Next I'll try uninstalling all Acronis products and reinstalling them. I'll also try installing them to another installation of Win 7.

Apologies to all. I was wrong in saying (above) that 6029 was the latest build of ATIH. I've now installed ATIH build 7046 and the problem is no longer occuring.

Either the later build fixes the drive locking problem, or re-installing the software fixed the problem; I can't tell now.
