Unable to Boot from New SSD
Hi,
I purchased a 2tb Crucial SSD, which came with Acronis True Image software, after my 2tb HDD threw a SMART error.
The HDD will still spin up in an external dock, and I can read all of the data on it. I've already run chkdsk on it, and it found 3 files to repair (2 of which in sys32).
The HDD contained programs, and my OS.
I then created a backup of the whole (failing) drive sector-by-sector, and attempted to restore this to the new SSD.
The SSD wasn't recognised as a bootable device.
I decided that since I had a full backup, it wouldn't hurt to try to clone it, so I created rescue media on a USB stick, loaded into that, hooked up my SSD where the HDD used to sit, and used the external dock to access the HDD.
Cloning completed and it says that it's missing the boot files. Using my Windows 7 Ultimate disc, I attempted to run system repair, which didn't work, and the commands:
- bootrec.exe /fixmbr
- bootrec.exe /fixboot
- bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
- bcdboot c:\Windows /s C:
I was clutching at straws with the last one.
When I ran rebuildbcd, I was told that it located 0 versions of Windows on my machine, so I followed this guide in this reply:
Part way through these attempts, I could get past where it would hang and tell me that the boot files were missing and get to (I don't know what section it's called, but) the bit where the 4 different coloured lights spin around and become the windows logo, and crash about 1 or 2 seconds into that animation.
When I've viewed the partitions on the drive, it's looked to me like it's missing the System Reserved partition, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong to cause that.
When I was trying to restore the backup I formatted the drive, but reading instructions for the cloning (which I performed after that failed) suggests not formatting it. Will this be something that could've created an issue?
Hoping for any help what-so-ever.
Cheers,
Martin
