Universal restore for a new computer

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell Precision laptop that is 3 years old.
I have purchased a new Dell Precision Laptop. Same brand, same Core i7 processor, but obviously it has different drivers for larger hard drive, ports, different video....etc
Can I use Universal Restore to restore my old laptop Acronis backup to my new one?

Yes, you should be able to. Since both systems are Win 7, you can litteraly copy the drivers folders in the Windows folders to use during the universal restore.
That said, a universal restore is first a restore and any restore can go wrong. Then you add the risks during the restore of slipstreaming drivers, then of not having the right drivers. In other words, a long can go wrong during Universal Restore, but it does work most of the times :-)

My recommendation is to do a backup of your new system so that you can go back to it anew in case your need to. Make sure the universal recovery medium is working on that new laptop to restore a couple of files from this new backup.

Then copy the windows/system32/drivers and windows/syswow64/drivers folders on a usb flash drive that will be available during the universal restore.

Start the universal restore from the recovery medium not from Window.s

Then you can try Universal restore for real

What do you mean by "Start the universal restore from the recovery medium not from Window.s"?
Is this the backup location (external disk drive is used). How do I "start" from here??

When you want to start the restore process, boot the computer on the Acronis Recovery CD, and use that version of True Image to perform the restore.

Hello NetNathanb,

please find here a step-by-step guide on how to restore to dissimilar hardware using Acronis Universal Boot. This guide also includes instruction on how to build a bootable media.

Thank you.
