Universal Restore Option Does not Appear

Thread needs solution

Sorry if this is a re-post, I don't see my original post in the forum, may have not posted it properly.

Firstly, I do have a ticket opened with support on this issue, but haven't heard back for a couple of days. So, thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone has some insight.

I'm attempting to transfer my OS from my old PC to a new one. My old PC is dual-boot, with Win7-64 and WinXP. Here's the process I followed:

1. Partition backup on old system of Win7 and WinXP partitions into a single .tib backup file. (Note: am NOT using the non-stop backup process here, am using a standard backup)
2. Moved this .tib file to a USB attached drive enclosure.
3. Installed Plus Pack.
4. Followed AIK and WinPE image creation process, including adding plugin using the WinPE ISO updater.
5. Burned the resulting .iso image to disk.
6. Attached the USB drive enclosure with the .tib backup to the new PC.
7. Booted new computer using the WinPE CD disk with the Acronis plug-in into Acronis start page. As the system boots, I can see the Windows drivers and files from the WinPE image load properly.
8. Attempted to run Recovery of the .tib backup from the USB attatched drive enclosure.

Any ideas?

sydor01,

The first time I installed the Plus Pack on Win64, it didn't work correctly. I had to repair install ATI, and then reinstall the Plus Pack. You might want to do this and produce a regular bootable USB flash drive as recovery media, then test it. This will allow faster iterations than the whole WinPE exercise. Once you get a regular bootable medium that shows the Universal Restore function, then you can test the WinPE.
Of course, if you cannot boot from a regular linux-based bootable medium, the point's moot...

I haven't tested UR with a dual-boot image. You may need to select the partitions separately (restore one at a time) to get UR to work.

Thanks PL and MC. I was wondering if 7-64 was flakey. All seemed well when running backups and building the images. And the boot process from the WinPE worked fine, up until the missing UR feature. But if the below method doesn't work, I'll try the repair and USB boot.

I also got a reply from Anton in the other thread I created on this (sorry again for the duplication :-~ ), and he also suggested doing a separate backup of each partition and restore each separately. I was considering trying that, but thought that the restore process may need to see both partitions based on the MBR. I have to be out of town for the next two days, but will definitely try this when I get back. I'll post results.

Thanks guys.

Just wanted to follow up on this, as I appeared to have solved this problem at least. The issue apparently was a back backup made through the USB connected external drive. Don't know if it was the slow throughput speed, but despite the backup process happily claiming "Backup Complete", it was in fact corrupted every time.

Fortunately, the enclosure I have also has an eSATA port. So after picking up a cable and doing a backup connected thru eSATA, I was able to get a backup that passed verification.

I do however still have a big problem trying to restore, which I'll be creating a new thread for right away.
