Upgrading disk drives

I currently have two internal drives on my laptop.
Drive 0 (256GB) contains partitions E and K
Drive 1 (512Gb) contains the system recovery partition, C and J.

I want to replace drive 0 with a solid state disk and end up with

Drive 0 (new SSD) bootable and containing system recovery, C and J
Drive 1 (old 512Gb) containing E and K.

I've got plenty of USB attached drives for backups but I'm trying to plan how to do it. I've already shrunk partitions to make sure there are no space problems.

Is it better to use Partition or Disk backup ?

Any advice very welcome (ATI2013).
