usb external drive drive

Thread needs solution

win xp sp3, bought hitachi 2T external usb hard drive, tih. If I leave the usb drive attached to computer, win xp won't boot. If I disconnect drive from usb port, win xp will boot. It appears the hitachi wants to boot, but can't because it doesn't contain any such files. One remedy i read was to disable usb in bios. If I were to disable usb during boot, system would never find my usb hitachi and therefore any hopes of a recovery ( if i ever needed it) would be permanently lost, right? So my only remedy is a workaround which means "turn on hitachi only when needed.... i.e to make regular weekly backups." Is my thinking correct or flawed something. (it's a nuicance to have to power on or connect the hitachi..... it's meant to turn on and off with the computer.) Any thoughts? please and thanks

Make sure the Boot Order in the Bios has the hard drive ahead of any usb devices.

Hello Peter and DwnNDrty,

DwnNDrty, you're absolutely correct. Peter, most likely your PC's BIOS is configured to use a USB as a first bootable device. That is why the PC tries to boot off the USB drive instead of using the internal one.

Please have a look at this article to have some information on how to change the boot sequence.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.
