usb hard disk cloning issue, destination disk greyed out
Im having trouble cloning a usb backup drive. I have a wd passport drive i want to clone. I bought an iomega usb backup drive of same capacity 500gb. I can select the source but the destination disk is greyed out. I tried in windows xp and from the boot image disk. Same result. I know that with vers. 11 I had no problem cloning two usb adapted sata hard disks, even of dissimilar sizes. Any ideas, sales is no help, after you buy the product. Support chat is not responding.

Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problem.
I'm trying to clone from a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB to a Momentus XT 750GB (Model 750LX003 on a USB interface).
The new drive is recognised for every function except as clone destination.
Discwizard was not recognising the drive, so I just upgraded to ATIH - with exactly the same result.
I use that same version of Discwizard & the same USB interface to clone from a 500GB WD drive to the 500GB Momentus XT a few months ago & everything worked fine.

Robert,
Are you using the TI Bootable media CD to perform the clone? If not, please do.
If yes, try using the ADD Disk option first to see if the 750 is seen? If yes, then use the Add disk option to add it to the system before doing the clone.
Also, on the Tools/utilities menu, there may be an option t the very bottom right corner which reads
Check currrent state of your disks.
This is a look alike for the Windows Disk Management function. Does your disk show in the utility?

I noticed that ATIH did not recognize the USB external if I plugged it in after starting ATIH up. I had to shut ATIH down then restart it and it recognized the drive. I'm pretty sure this also applies to the boot disc.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd already tried the 'Add disk' option to initialise the 750gb drive & create a partition on it.
That is seen by both Windows & ATIH, and can be selected as a Source.
It can be examined using the 'View current state of your hard drives' tool
The one thing I can't do is select it as a destination for cloning...
I've just tried making a bootable CD, starting the machine from that gives exactly the same results as when running from within Windows.
The only thing left to try is physically swap the drives & put the 500gb on the USB adapter.

I believe my next step would be to check the 500 source for disk errors.
CHKDSK C: /R
Reporting of results appear in the Event option.

Hi guys,
I've also got an momentus xt 750gb drive and tried to clone from a laptop internal drive (an hitachi 320gb) to it, a "write error" was raised during the cloning process. Nothing is cloned to the new drive.
Next I tried to "recover" a disk backup image of the hitachi drive to the new drive and surprisingly, the momentus drive is "greyed out" when I was asked for the destination drive. The recovery option I chose was manual and to copy the partitions "As-is". It doesn't allow me to choose the drive as if the drive size was smaller than the image size, though the momentus hybrid drive has 8gb of ssd chip built-in.
So, is the momentus hybrid drive actually supported by ATIH cloning?

I found a work-around by doing a whole-disk backup to a generic USB hard drive, then swapping the new 750GB seagate in to the machine and doing a whole-disk restore. (Both done booting from the atih cd).
The drive letters look wrong during the process, but one completed the machine booted straight in to Windows with no problems, everything still working fine.
The problem appears to be when the hybrid drive is on a USB interface, once on the internal SATA controller it seems OK.
Robert.

Another work around is to open the case and detach the power and sata cables from the CD drive and attach them to your new Hard Drive. Leave the case open taking care that the new hard drive is on a flat stable surface. Reboot the computer into Windows. You may need to format the new drive in order for you to see it in explorer. (Right click Computer > Manage ) After that start Acronis. It will now recognize that the new hard drive is connected via the sata cable (not USB) and will allow you to create a clone onto it.
