Virtual box with acronis 2013

Thread needs solution

I am german. Beg you pardon for my bad english.
I want to install my old msdos 6 with windows 3.11 in a virtual machine of virtual box.
The 400MB HardDisk with it is bootable on my HP PC with a dual core Intel processor.
Also a clone on a memorystick is bootable on this hardware.
Also an acronis bootable medium is bootable on this Hardware.

So i made an acronis image of it on a bootable CD and started it in a virtual Box newly created virtual machine.

Then an error occurs ...... This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your cpu.

Ubuntu and other Linuxes install propperly in virtual box.
What can i do?

Did you backup the entire disk, not just the OS partition? it's important to backup the whole disk.

If you prefer, there is a German-language forum:

Beg your Pardon.
After some investigation i found out i have to activate pae in a tab of the options of the new virtual machine of the virtual box.
Acronis rescue medium starts now and i can select the backup on it.
My next problem is, there is no drive to restore it to.
Maybe i'll find out - you have a tip?

Thank you very much!

Gottfried,

What do you mean by 'there is no drive to restore it to' ?

I am confused as True Image doesn't install on Windows 3.11. As you can see I use Virtual Box and have made images from Windows XP,Vista,W7 in Virtual Box. Recovery of an image is not so easy though, what you need to do is to convert the True Image tib file to a VHD and then attach the VHD to Virtual Box, or convert the VHD to VDI and then re-attach.

You will probably find you have to release the old drive that VB uses as the signature that VB embeds in the virtual drives won't exist in the recovered image.

Colin,

I made an bootable image CD of this (running and booting) old Harddisk with acronis 2013 full version with the "make bootable" option on a windows 7 PC, where it resides, the old HD attached.

I can boot this bootable image CD on an other PC and restore with the rescuesystem on it goes normal - The PC does boot with dos6.22 and i can start win 3.11 then

When I try to start this CD in virtual Box everything seems to be allright now at the beginning - Acronis starts and i can select the image on the CD, but I can not select any (virtual) HD to restore it to at the end.

Every other actual installation CD of ubuntu centos elastix or sodo find it. So i think this should or could work.

I think this way would be a easy way to move different, many years old developmentsystems into a virtual appliance. (Plus Pack?)
Someone did it but i lost this thread to ask him for details. I just remembered "a good idea, i'll try it!"

The way you write "what you need to do is to convert the True Image tib file to a VHD and then attach the VHD to Virtual Box, or convert the VHD to VDI and then re-attach" i did not manage.

I am happy you answer.

Hi!

I did it with the PlusPack. I created a Acronis PE DVD and installed the extensions of virtual Box to virtual box. I did choose more Ram as 32 MB (512) and a VHD virtual HD and a processor with pae. The Image was on an USB Stick.
Then i started the PE DVD in the newly created virtual machine and restored the image of dos6.22 with win 3.11 from the USB Stick to the uninitialized 500MB virtual HD.

It really works. That's nice.

Now I will try to virtualize my old XP Development system in the same manner. :-))

That is good news, thanks for reporting the solution.
