When to disconnect a bootable drive after cloning?

Thread needs solution

Hi-

This is related to my other thread about not being able to boot from a cloned drive, but it's more general so I thought I'd break it out into a new thread.

I'm about to re-do the clone of my Win 7 OS drive, and I know I need to disconnect either the original or clone before I re-boot.

When exactly is it safe to do that? I don't remember seeing any option in ATI Home 2010 to shut down after the clone is completed, but maybe I just missed it. IIRC, it just automatically restarted.

I read about this issue for v. 9, I think it was, and it was supposed to be fixed. It seems like a pretty big deal to leave as-is (again, assuming I didn't just miss it!), and it should definitely be mentioned in the documentation, IMO.

Thanks-

-Susan

You didn't miss a Shutdown feature in the bootable CD - you have to hit the X .... but the system will try to reboot, so you have to be quick and pull the plug before it restarts. Then you can disconnect the original before restarting the system with the cloned drive only.

After the first, hopefully successful, boot of the clone, you can reconnect the original.

Hi DwnNDrty-

Well, that's kind of inelegant ;)!, but just the info I was waiting for, so thanks again! :-)

Unfortunately, it is very seldom that you can use the words "True Image" and "elegant" in the same sentence. ;-)
Good luck with the cloning.

Hi DwnNDrty-

Success! I think...

I pulled the plug on the original drive after the cloning was completed and did a Startup Repair on the cloned drive. It seemed to work after that, but I'll have to restart one more time to be sure.

The dual boot options still show "Windows 7 (recovered), but that's the least of my worries! I gather I can just use
BCDedit or some such to change that?

Acronis really needs to make this whole process more user-friendly, IMO.

I'll post back with my final results after I re-attach my original OS hard drive and reboot. Wish me luck! :-)

Thanks very much again-

It works great! Thanks so much again! :-)

I reconnected the original (IDE) drive after rebooting, and that's seen fine as well, but doesn't interfere with the boot sequence at all.

My only remaining "niggle", and it's admittedly a very small one, is that Windows 7 still comes up as a "(recovered)" boot option, even though it's working fine. That should be pretty easy to fix, though, and isn't a big concern.

Big thanks, DwnNDrty!

You're way ahead of me with BCD edit. I vaguely remember having to use it for dual boot.

The lack of being user friendly stems from having to translate instructions from Russian to English - the true meaning sometimes gets lost or distorted somewhat.

In case you haven't seen or read it yet, the Sticky at the top by GroverH has a wealth of useful and easily understood information.

Ahh ... I was writing as you posted above .... congratulations. Wouldn't BCD edit let you edit that "recovered" out.

Hi DwnNDrty-

You're probably right. I thought I'd done due diligence before, but sometimes you don't know what you're looking for until you find it!

I can probably edit that "recovered" entry in BCDEdit now that everything's working correctly.

Absolute bliss to have all my drives so quiet now!

Thanks again-

Susan:

bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows 7"

Do this from an elevated command prompt while booted to Windows 7. The blue text can be anything that you want.
