Why does this work with more than 64 GB RAM?

Thread needs solution

We are fans of your product. Easily backup, and if you know how wonderful recovery. but one disturbs us and that if the customer has 64GB and more RAM, recovery function does not work. Only with Acronis 2013 does it work. Have it with Acronis 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, tested in 2014 and 2015.

Why is that?

Hello Brentford,

Have you tried using WinPE media? In 2015 it is 64-bit and may address large RAM better for some hardware where the Linux-based media fails for any reason.

As for the Linux-based media, would you be able to describe the failing scenario in detail?

I.e.:

- create backup of the entire disk (separate partitions?) => OS is Win 7;
- create default Linux-based media;
- boot the machine with 64 GB RAM (any examples of the exact config/PC models? Win + R => msinfo32 => Ctrl+S to save it can help to show an example);
- restore the image (entire disk with MBR? separate partitions only?)
- what happens exactly during/after restore? log of recovery will be helpful; screenshots of the exact boot failure wil help, too
- if you restore the same image to machine with 32 GB - the issue is gone;
- etc.

Thank you,
Alexander

Hello Alexander

The only problem is is that the boot CD will not start. And also in recovery from Windows, remains after the restart, the Acronis makes the image black. So he does not start in the Acronis BootCD menu, or whatever you call it.

With Acronis BootCD from 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015, this work is not.
With the Acronis BootCD from 2013 everything works perfectly.

Otherwise everything is going well!

Brentford,

To clarify:

> the boot CD will not start

=> do you get to Acronis Loader screen, i.e. where you're given choices: "Load Acronis True Image" and "Continue booting in Windows"? And when you choose to load Acronis True Image -> there is a black screen, and GUI with all the backup/restore functionality fails?

Or even the loader screen doesn't appear at all?

Thx,
Alexander

Hello Alexander

The selection screen is displayed, but then the screen stays black. Except for the Acronis BootCD from 2013, where it works.

Hello Brentford,

If you're up to it, I can investigate this for you with our Linux developer, but I'll need some involvement from your side in terms of sending over diagnostic data, maybe in several iterations - to get to the root of it.

If you agree, please ping me via personal message - I'll share the means how to send all the data over to me.

The list of data we'll need (all must be gathered from the same single machine where the problem is reproducible; media to check the suggestions below should be True Image 2015):

===============================================
1. Windows System Information from within Windows:

Win + R => msinfo32 => Ctrl + S => save the output as NFO file

2. Check if 'nomodeset' parameter changes the behavior of True Image 2015 boot media:

2.1 Boot from True Image 2015 media. Wait till it shows you "Acronis True Image" and "Continue OS Booting".
2.2 Click F11. You will see a text box with "quiet".
2.3 Add to the text box: "nomodeset" after a space without quotes (so in the end you'll have this in the line: quiet nomodeset) and press OK -> choose to load Acronis True Image
2.4 Check if the behavior changes => take a picture of the result (name it "nomodeset" to discern it later easily)

3. Get a picture of the boot process of 2015 bootable media in non-quiet mode:

3.1 Boot from True Image 2015 media. Wait till it shows you "Acronis True Image" and "Continue OS Booting".
3.2 Click F11. You will see a text box with "quiet".
3.3 Remove "quiet" -> press OK -> choose to load Acronis True Image
3.4. Once it's stuck on loading, take a picture (name it "non_quiet")

===============================================

If you get a chance to gather this data, ping me personally - and I'll assist you with uploading it and will forward to the developers for review to locate the root cause.

Thx,
Alexander

I have this exact same issue with Acronis 2015, where the USB recovery boots half-way into Acronis Recovery and just hangs.

The USB successfully boots into the Acronis Recovery application up and until you install 64 GB of RAM. When the machine is equipped with 64 GB of RAM the boot will just freeze half-way. So apparently, there's nothing wrong with the USB stick.

What is the workaround for this issue?
I'm being unsuccessful with Acronis 2013 and Acronis 2015 when booting from USB stick. But it works if I remove one RAM module (going down from 64 GB to 48 GB).

I have created the USB bootable stick in Windows 7 and I'm attempting to perform a backup and recovery on a Linux machine.

I'm assuming you should be able to reproduce the issue by simply loading a test machine with 64 GB RAM.

Hi Acronis, I also have the same problem, Acronis 2014 & 2015 hang during recovery (black screen).
When I reduce 64GB RAM to 48GB RAMall is running well.

Any help on this ?
