Why doesn't Acronis make a backup of all my files

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

Running Win 7 x64 and on the 2nd year with Acronis TI.

Experiencing an odd behaviour from Acronis today.

As soon as this morning, I made a system backup of my C partition, as I usually do. Before the backup, I noticed that the backup was 28GB, as expected.

But, the archive file were only 12GB - normal compression rate.

And, when I checked the files in the backup archive, some files were missing. Both my Program files and some other files. My Program files is not the ones in the standard Windows folder "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)". These were present. The ones that I am missing, is all my manually installed programs, which I have made a separate folder for.

It has never been a problem, and the latest backup (some days ago) worked as always.

Please help, as I have tried everything I can think of, and still can't do a full backup no matter what.

Thanks in advance.

What version and build number of True Image is this? If you're doing the Image from within Windows try it via the bootable CD and vice versa.

I've experienced this with both the 2009 and 2010 version. My backups are done from within windows, and have worked without a flaw until this afternoon.

Did you check the Event Log and choose the Show All option? I've had backups before that the graphical calendar showed as green, but that the detail log showed as having errors. The errors led to some files not being copied. Also, have you checked to see that the programs on your C: drive are still present and working? Could something have happened to them before the backup that the backup is reflecting?

Perhaps you could try to backup selective folders including the one with your applications and a couple of others just to see what happens. I don't have Win7 so I can't suggest or know of anything regarding that in particular, but it would highlight whether the folder (or partition) is not corrupt in any way, and you could do a chkdsk on it too anyway.

Thanks for replying.
I'll follow your suggestions and see what happens. If nothing works i'll try with a format/reinstall.

Now it works!

First I tried to backup only one folder, namely the one that didn't make it to my backup folder. It didn't work. Then I tried some other procedures, with no better luck.

So I ended up with a reformat/reinstall, a downgrade of my Windows bit version from x64 to x32 and a downgrade of TIA from 2010 to 2009. And new applications will only be installed in the Program Files folder.

This seems to work now. So whether it was the reformat, the downgrades, the reinstall or the fact that I only use Windows Program Files folder, I can't say for sure. But now it works, and I am just thrilled and happy.

Glad it is working now.
It isn't clear exactly what caused the problem as you say but hopefully after what you have done it won't arise again.
As for installing anything to places other than the normal Program Files area it can be more of a pain with very few advantages. I used to do that once upon a time but after a while it just annoyed me that I'd done it - it was one more thing to remember that I didn't really need to!

The most likely thing is that there were file system errors onthe hard disk and that caused the problems with th subject files. Chkdsk might or might not have fixed the probs. It can fix most that it can recognize but it can't recognize.fix them all.
