Why is Estimated Backup size 6 times larger than the source?
Can anyone tell me why a Backup task should say that the estimated backup size is 239GB, when the source (target) drive I want to back up is only 40GB?
I am only doing a one-off Full, Custom backup with sector-by-sector (but NOT Unallocated space) boxes checked.
It tells me that there is 211GB of free space on the Destination drive but warns that: "There is not enough free space" !
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, desktop
ATI 2012 (Build 6131).
Thanks.

Thanks tuttle.
I just did a backup (AND validated too) not using sector-by-sector and I was surprised how much less time it took than normal - and how much less space used too. I shall be using ths method in future.
Thanks again :)

You're welcome.
That (not "sector by sector") is the normal method of performing a backup. I wish people wouldn't select options, such as that one, without looking up what they mean. Perhaps clicking "sector by sector" should come with a warning about its implications, stating that it is rarely needed.
You'll find that selecting various compression levels also affects backup archive size, though not by a huge percentage.

Yes, well I know I would have read up on all of that when I originally started using ATI (2008 or 09) and I wanted my backups to be as comprehensive and full as seemed reasonable, but I hadn't realized that sector-by-sector took such a huge amount of space, and time. Although I'm not sure that the completed backup size matches the Estimated space needed.
I just checked back on previously backed up tasks because the size of backup varies, for the same task, and I'm not sure now what the original settings were. They may have changed because I did click to make my last one a Default setting (without sector-by-sector) and this may have altered my original settings when I clicked to check them on "Edit backup settings". If you can make sense of that? lol.
Altogether there is such a lot to comprehend. It also takes much time to read up in the Users Help pages plus searching in this forum and Knowledge base.
Thanks again for your interesting replies.

Thanks Grover. I remember reading some of your guides when I first started using ATI.
