Why file backup?

Hello,

Please your help in clarifying this before deciding on a backup strategy:

I'm interested in a full-computer, periodical backup of a single computer.
Is there any reason to do a file backup instead of a disk backup?
(I understand individual files can be restored from a disk backup as well).
