A Win98 backup/restore with 2010 Home: "this system is not recognized as a supported dell pc"

Thread needs solution

Greetings all,
Here's a weird one for ya... I need to clone a Windows 98 machine (I know, but it is needed to run some old interactive training CDs). The drive did not come out of a Dell and is not going into a Dell, but when I try to boot from the re-imaged hard drive, it immediately goes into Dell Diagnosics and then give me the "this system is not recognized as a supported dell pc" and will go no further.

I've done a Sector by Sector backup (checking the Recover Disk Signature) and that doesn't help. If I put the original HD that I am imaging into the 2nd box, it boots as it should. But the re-imaged HDs (I've tried more than one) that are from the restore give me the error.

Backup and restore being done with Acronis True Image Home 2010.

Thanks in advance for any advice to any of you who remember anything about Windows 98! :)

1. Sector-by-Sector backup is almost never needed. Just do a full disk backup without selecting that option.

2. Clones often go wrong, because users don't understand the risks and may clone from wrong drive, or may reboot with both drives still connected. A full disk backup followed by restorring to the desired drive is much safer. Try that.

3. You may well be able to run those old applications on Windows 7. It may not even require using compatibility mode. I run some old applications that were written for Windows 98 or Windows 95, and they work fine under Win7.
