Windows 8 (RTM) shutdown/restart not working

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I've set up a test build with Windows 8 RTM and Acronis True Image 2013 and the option to run the backup at shutdown or restart is not working.

I've tried following options:

1. Pressing ALT+F4 when you're on the desktop (which brings up the classic Shutdown dialog)
2. Shutting down via the charm bar, doesn't work either.

These options will defintely be most the used, so I guess some fix needs to be done to get the above working (unless I'm doing something work)

If there's an option to have it working via locking and then choosing shut down I don't think this is the way to go as it involves to many actions before the pc can get shutdown.

I'm using Acronis True Image 2013 build 5551.

Please have a look and tnx for the feedback.

Regards,
Tom

Tom,

Is this a bare metal installation or a booting VHD of W8?

What happens if you try Win Button + O and select shutdown/restart from the pop up menu?

Hi,

Bare metal installation

Windows Key + O is not working (nothing happens both not from the Metro interface and when you're on the desktop

Sorry,

From the desktop, W button + I .

W button + I not working both not from the desktop and the metro interface.
Locking the computer and choosing shutdown from there is also not working

In each of the cases above the pc just shuts down. I'm sure the backup device is attached and is up and running.

Win start + i should get you the slide out shutdown panel. Win start + x selected control panel items and task manager, Win Start + u the narrator, Win start + p the second screen selection panel.

If none of these work, there might be a W8 installation problem. I assume you are using the RTM build of W8.

Hi,

Just read my previous message again and probably I explained it too confusing.

The shortcuts are working but it never triggers True Image 2013 during shutdown.
That's what I mean to say.

So once again Windows behavior is like it should be but Acronis True Image never starts to backup during shutdown.

Yes, I'm using Windows 8 RTM on a bare metal system (doing a test/lab build before Windows 8 will be released) so I'm prepared for questions/assistance once Windows 8 is launched in a few weeks.

Tom,

Are you trying to get True Image to run at Shutdown or getting True Image to run, and then True Image shuts down the computer?

Hi,

See attached screenshot in my 2nd post. As far as I can see it's scheduled upon event "shutdown or restart"

Tom,

Surprisingly I do have a paid job, I help out on this forum in my spare time both at work and at home, so whilst I do come here almost daily, I don't (and the same goes for the other MVPs), always have time to immediately try and replicate forum users problems.

I will be trying to replicate your problem with my W8 copy, though my W8 is part of a multi boot VHD system, so that may or may not cloud the issue.

If you need quicker help, then the official Acronis support is the place to go.

Are you imaging to an external drive - USB/Firewire/NAS?

Have you tried unticking the 'do not let the computer hibernate or sleep' option, this might be taking priority over the shutdown instruction in 2013.

Ok, I understand it was not meant personally to you, hope you understand this.

Imaging is done to an USB 3.0 connected drive.

I'll try with unchecking the option you mention.

Tnx for the reply.

Tom

Unticked the box but still the same no luck, perhaps I need to try another USB port

Tom

That's a pity :( . I don't think it'll be the actual port causing the problem in your case. I take it standard scheduled tasks work OK? If you haven't tried making a task that doesn't involve the Windows 'shutdown' command, I suggest that you should try it, just to make sure there isn't a deeper problem on your system.

What make and model is your PC/Laptop assuming it isn't a 'Heinz 57' variety?

Hi,

Tnx for the reply.

Will try with a scheduled task

The pc is a ASUS mb connected to a WD Drive

Will keep you posted on my findings.

Tom

Tom,

The WD drive, is it one of those that came with it's own library and imaging software that needed to be installed (such as the Book series), or is it just a plain vanilla WD drive in an external caddy?

It's a WD essentials drive, there was software on it but none of it was installed

Hi,

Tried with a scheduled task and that works. So scheduling issue can be restricted to the fact that it's only not working when shutting down

Tom

Tom,

Bad news, it works on my W8 laptop, so the question is what is different between your Windows 8 setup and mine.

My laptop is a Lenovo Edge 420 Type 1140CTO.

Windows 8 is installed as a booting VHD image.

Have you tried running a repair install of TI 2013 ?
