Windows process handle count excessive for Trueimagehomenotify.exe

Thread needs solution

I use a Samsung R580 with intel core I3, 4GB ram, 500GB HDD Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and run TIH 2015 Build 6613.

Why Trueimagehomenotify.exe launches when it does I do not know. Can be any day of week. Backup is scheduled for a Friday only.

Once launched, the Windows process handle count soon starts to increase, and the PC starts to slow down. When I first noticed this, the count had reached over 147,000!

Kill it off using task manager, and all is well again until it self launches. This can happen several times a day, or not at all.

Have tried clean re-installs to no avail.
Today's instance is only a modest count, see Task Manager details
Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Oliver, I would suspect the reason for no answers is that the original poster, Graham, hasn't followed up on this issue, and it is not an issue that I remember seeing reported in these forums recently.

Looking at the screen image posted by the OP, it looked like a problem with a specific task as identified by the script value shown.  This should match with a .TIS file found in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder which will identify what actual task is involved.

OK. From the OP's screen image I found the TIS file for the script, 4E96A692-E324-4815-A597-B497EFF1B94E.tib.tis. So what do I do with it to stop the sucking of CPU? Like the OP, several times a day, some days many times, I see that CPU usage is way up and Task Manager shows the offender to be Trueimagehomenotify.exe. I can temporarily end the process, but it comes back, sometimes with seconds. My question now is how we use knowing the TIS file for the script that runs it, how do we use that to stop this from happening?

Oliver, now that you have found the .TIS file corresponding to the entry with all the open handles, then within the top of that .TIS file should be the name of the backup task that is at the heart of this issue.

There are two possibilities with the task name, it will either show as an actual task that you created, or else it will show as "Backup Validation" - if the latter, then you can simply delete the .TIS file, though you may need to end the TrueImageHomeNotify.exe process via Windows Task Manager to ensure there are no locks on the file.

If it is one of your backup tasks, then consider using the 'Clone settings' option for the task to make a copy of it then remove the problem task settings - you do not need to remove all the backup files for the task, only the settings, then see if you still see any such problems with open handles?

Thanks, My next question is how do you see the top of that .TIS file? Trying to open it by clicking doesn't do it. Using Google to find a TIS reader only hets me a few results asking me to download a program from I source I'm not sure is useful or trustworthy. How would I find the task name? As for "Backup Validation", I only run this concurrently with a backup, and I have no scheduled backups.  All backups are run only on demand and I have no prest ones. The backups themselves are on an external hard drive that is only connected as I do backups.

I don'y know if this is related, but sometimes, very rarely, when I an shutting down Win7,  it tells me to wait 2 minutes while TIH complets some task, and I have no idea why that task is running.

Thanks for your patience.

Oliver, sorry I should have said earlier that these .TIS files are text files and can be opened with Notepad - the content is in XML syntax and the task name is at the shown in a pair of <display>My Task Name Here</display> brackets.

The issue with ATIH needing a couple of minutes at shutdown has been addressed in the later versions of ATIH 2016 and in 2017, but should not be related to this issue unless you have the same backup task active at shutdown.

Here's a file from the TIH Scripts folder 4E96A692-E324-4815-A597-B497EFF1B94E.tib.tis. Trying to open it with Notepad doesn't do anything, not even any kind of error message.  I'm now at a loss for what to do,

Oliver, your upload didn't seem to work.  Copy the file to your deskop and name .tis to .txt.  It should open like that as well.  Normally, you can just say "open with" and pick notepad - make sure to use notepad and not wordpad.

Oliver, the other approach here, now that you have identified the .TIS file with all the volume of open handles, is to move that file to say a TEMP subfolder that you create in the SCRIPTS folder, then see if Acronis moans about it being missing and check in the main application GUI to see if one of your backup tasks has disappeared?

Thanks to both of you I can now open a TIS file by renaming it a TXT file.

It shows

<version>1.0</version>
    <uuid>BE824990-FAB4-4CE8-BAD7-E3D1A940DD08</uuid>
    <display>My folders</display>
    <priority>normal</priority>
    <stage>

The uuid line identifies the script.  Everyt time I end the TIHNotify.exe in Task Manager, it usually restarts ina few seconds and then there is a new TIS file for that instance of the program (with a new TIS file).

The backup tasks defined are ones already completed. I am using TIH 2016 to make the backups to an external hard drive.  I have deleted all those tasks from the TIH startup page since I don't really need them. I always just create a new task, and I'll be deleting that from TIH on completion.

I'm hoping that this will fix my problem. Thanks again.

PS After deleting all the old completed backups, I just noticed that the TIH/Scripts folder is empty. If this issue comes back, I'll try just deleting all the TIS files.

Oliver, thanks for the update, let's hope your clearing all the tasks and .TIS files will resolve the issue you reported.

If not, then I would suggest doing a Repair install of the software.
