Read Error or Metadata Corrupted - bad or just annoying?
True Image 2017 Mac V 3.3.8035
iMac iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) running OS X Sierra v10.12.5
backing up to a nearly-new external hard drive
occasionally throws a "READ ERROR OR METADATA CONTENT IS CORRUPTED" message.
One time I ran Disk Utility First Aid, and retried the backup successfully.
This latest time that didn't work, so I used Disk Utility to unmount and remount the drive. Retry succeeded.
Can I safely write these off as just one of life's little annoyances? Or should I worry that I can't rely on my backups?

It's USB 2.0, direct to computer as recommended by various sources.
Does not have its own power source.

You might try a different USB port if one is available. Many case mounted ports are under powered, it is therefore recommended that ports directly attached to the motherboard are used if possible.
