Split Backup

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Is there a way to split backups on the Mac version so the file is smaller?   Alternatively a shell script after successful backup would let me manually do this as well.

Thanks,

Thomas

Hello Thomas,

Currently it's not possible, we've raised a feature request for this option.

Hi! The feature wasn't accepted to be included into a certain scope yet. Would you add more details on why this feature is important to you\use case?

Thank you!

I use this feature on my Windows machines in order to copy the backup files across a WAN. It's much easier to copy one-hundred 5GB files as opposed to one 500GB file. I'd very much love the same for my MAC backups.

Thank you.

Good day. Any chance of this feature being added in the near future?

Thank you.

Hello Joshua,

this feature is in our backlog, but hasn't been assigned to a particular release yet. I've registered your vote for the feature.

Hi

I would also like the feature to be added to the Mac version.

Thanks,

Hi Athanasios ! Added your vote!
Would you mind sharing more details on how this feature could be useful for you?

I'd up vote it too.  I appreciate this feature in Windows for a few reasons that translate to the Mac side as well:

1) Performance and speed of the backup.  PCIE NVME drives that use TLC NAND flash memory run out of buffer on large file read and writes.  If a backup results in (just an example) a single 100GB file, the backup can take much longer than if it was broken down into say 10 x 10Gb files.

2) Likewise, writing backups to a NAS over the network can degrade write performance if transferring a single large file, vs more manageable smaller files.  Many home NAS devices have limited memory and or CPU's that can be overtaxed when needing to manage large file writes

3) Those who want to transfer their backup to an FTP resource are typcially limited to 2GB file sizes, the same as Windows.  Those with FAT32 formatted USB drives are limited to 4GB file sizes, the same as Windows

4) Currently, there is no possibility to write an image to a DVD/Blu-ray unless it is small enough (I think - I haven't actually tried though and don't have such a player on my "Hackintosh" VM.  If it is possible, some may be interested in writing backups to this media at times.

Basically, a single large backup file, is not ideal in all situations, especially where peformance and/or storage devices may have limitations of available space for a single backup file or difficulty processing a single large file.

Thank you for sharing good examples, Bobbo, added to the feature request!

I need backup splitting with configurable file size too: some clouds have upload file size limitations and using Acronis cloud directly is not always possible or desirable.

Thank you for your input! Registered the feedback

I could really use this backup splitting feature for MacOS now.

I backup to a DiskStation NAS. The NAS replicates to another site, but even with a block level backup it wants to replicate the entire backup file when incremental updates are done. I can't sync 500+GB of data over the WAN every time I do an incremental backup.

Please add my vote to this feature. I'll have to use Arq Backup for now
